Multi-tab.xyz is a website that infects web browsers and replaces their search engine and new tab page. It is not especially dangerous, but if it’s allowed to take over web browsers, it behaves like a browser hijacker. It makes unhelpful changes to browser settings, opens unwanted websites, and tracks web browsing activities.

What is Multi-tab.xyz?
Multi-tab.xyz is a newtab virus
Multi-tab.xyz is a very simple website. It is a new tab-like page with a search box and a few links to popular websites. Aside from that, Multi-tab.xyz has a Privacy Policy and Terms of Service document.
It also has a page that advertises a related browser extension and promises that it provides “better search experience” and is “fun & easy to use”. To provide these vague features, Multi-tab.xyz says that it will need to change the browser’s default search engine and new tab settings.
Multi-tab.xyz is a type of newtab virus. Its job-tab.xyz is to control web searches. Being set as the new tab page and default search engine in web browsers allows it to control or influence web search results of the owners of the infected browsers.
This also allows Multi-tab.xyz to read the search history of those browsers, which is very valuable for advertisers (and which can include personal information). While most regular search engines also log your search history, they all allow you to view and manage it, deleting all of it or just specific entries – unlike Multi-tab.xyz.
And the worst part is that Multi-tab.xyz gives its users absolutely no useful features. Its new tab page allows for no customization, which means:
- no frequently visited sites,
- no pinning links to your favorite sites,
- no background picture.
As a new tab, Multi-tab.xyz just would not provide a good experience.
How hijackers spread
For now, Multi-tab.xyz does not seem to be popular. Its extension on the Chrome Web Store currently shows no users. Still, it is active – I came across it while looking at other search hijacking sites, that is Studentslearnintogether.club and Search.surfharvest.xyz.
But how does Multi-tab.xyz spread? If it really has nothing to offer its users, how is this website is active at all? There are a few possible explanations:
- Multi-tab.xyz redirects search traffic from other fake search engines,
- it spreads with adware bundles (adware bundles are often promoted with misleading ads, such as fake software update prompts),
- it’s promoted by free app installers as an optional offer,
- it’s promoted by adware infections and browser hijackers.
When installing free programs, be careful to avoid ads and offers in their installers. And be careful to not install unknown browser extensions. But if you fail to avoid adware, know that it’s simple enough to get rid of hijackers like Multi-tab.xyz – we include the instructions below.
How to remove Multi-tab.xyz
Uninstall all apps and extensions that might be related to Multi-tab.xyz. Check which apps were installed at or before the date that Multi-tab.xyz started showing up. Review your browser extensions and see if you have any that you didn’t intentionally install or any that you don’t use yourself.
Besides reviewing your software manually, you can employ antivirus tools to help you. Programs like Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, and others can help you find out which programs and files on your device might be problematic.
After that, check your browser settings to make sure that nothing nasty is left behind by the Multi-tab.xyz hijacker.
