MultiFile Converter - How to remove

MultiFile Converter on Multifile-converter.com is a browser add-on that offers to help users convert files. It replaces the browser’s new tab page and offers another extension, Security Point, which takes over the omnibox. As a result, both extensions thoroughly take over a browser, forcing it to open Yahoo.com to display web search results.

MultiFile Converter does provide online file converters, but it very unnecessarily takes over the new tab page and the default search engine. It’s not harmful, but it could be considered a potentially unwanted program.

Is MultiFile Converter safe?

MultiFile Converter is a new tab file converter

The Multifile-converter.com website promotes the MultiFile Converter browser add-on, which can be installed from the Chrome Web Store.

Once installed, MultiFile Converter replaces the new tab page – the default blank page – of the browser. On the new tab page, there’s time, weather, news, and links to various file converters.

Before that, though, MultiFile Converter offers to install Security Point Extension – a search replacer that shows whether it thinks the site you’re on is safe and warns you about unsafe sites.

MultiFile Converter is advertised as helping users convert files.

It pushes Yahoo.com

The extensions are operated by Black Rock Interactive – a marketing company that uses in-house big data to help advertisers target their ads. Other extensions by the same company are TopRecipeFinder and RadioSimplified.

While MultiFile Converter does deliver the features that it promised, it also causes potentially unwanted redirects to Yahoo.com. Especially when Security Point Extension is also installed. From what I saw, there’s no setting given by either extension to change the search engine to another site.

Browser extensions forcing users to visit Yahoo is nothing new. There’s nothing wrong with Yahoo, but there’s also no reason for MultiFile Converter or Security Point Extension to push it. It’s annoying and it doesn’t fit with the spirit of Google’s single purpose policy, which states that extensions should have a single purpose.

MultiFile Converter promotes security point.

Should you remove MultiFile Converter?

Alternatives to the extensions

Whether or not you should remove MultiFile Converter and Security Point Extension is up to you.

If you really like these extensions and find them useful, then keep them. Although it’s important to know that there are alternatives to both file conversion and website scanning.

  • Files can often be converted by the same programs that edit them. When that’s not an option, an offline application is almost always better than an online converter, as you get more privacy (no need to upload your file to someone else’s server) and options. (How to convert any file to any format)
  • Malicious sites and ads can often be blocked by a competent ad blocker. Some anti-malware programs, like Malwarebytes, block dangerous sites, too. Also, though Security Point Extension’s description says that the add-on will let me “browse the internet, without concerns of malicious sites, viruses, pop-up ads, and other online threats”, it did not stop any pop-ups or shady ads that I came across.

However, I thought that MultiFile Converter was a lot like a newtab virus – an extension whose main purpose is not to be helpful, but to monetize each and every user at the cost of customization and privacy.

How to delete MultiFile Converter

You can uninstall MultiFile Converter, Security Point, and other extensions by following the instructions below. Take the opportunity to check what other extensions you have installed and remove those that you don’t use or didn’t intentionally install.

Consider using an anti-malware app (Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner for Mac, Spyhunter for PC, etc.) to protect your device from adware and malware. MultiFile Converter is just a mildly annoying browser add-on, but there are actually dangerous hijackers out there – SmartSignalSearch, FunctionLogInput, etc.
