Mycinema.pro is a website that belongs to the Magic Actions for YouTube™ extension. The users of the extension say that they’ve been seeing pop-ups by Mycinema.pro that appear problematic. Magic Actions is a great Chrome extension that people are really happy with: it offers enhanced volume control, cinema mode, ad-blocking, and other options – and it’s earned over a million users. But this extension also displays misleading pop-ups that open blog posts on Mycinema.pro.

Every time users open their browser, Magic Actions shows some pop-up that they’ve seen a hundred times.
It seems as if the developer of Mycinema.pro thinks that the pop-ups are doing a favor to the users of the extension. Some users do appreciate the alerts, though they seem to believe that the alerts are accurate (they often aren’t). Also, as the pop-ups only appear once in a while, they don’t seem to be a big deal. Although the developer is free to do what they want with their extension, it’s fair to have an issue with Mycinema.pro’s alerts – they’re misleading and have absolutely nothing to do with Youtube.

Issues with the pop-ups
On opening the browser, Magic Actions show pages about Chrome being outdated and about third-party apps having access to the user’s Google account. And it doesn’t seem like the pop-ups are based on the state of the user’s browser (not that that’d be okay – the browser is private), they’re just shown to everyone.
Misleading and unnecessary
While it is good to update your browser regularly, it’s understandable why some users of Magic Actions for YouTube™ are concerned about that Mycinema.pro pop-up. Fake warnings about outdated software and required updates are used to spread malware all the time (fake Flash updates, fake browser updates, alerts spreading adware, fake virus scans) so seeing such pop-ups shown by their favorite extension, even if they are harmless, is stressful! They look like they’re promoting a tech support scam, or something. (And hey, use Combo Cleaner for Mac OS or SpyHunter for Windows to check if you actually have malware on your computer).
Most people allow their browser to update automatically, so the Mycinema.pro’s pop-ups are irrelevant. Other people stop automatic updates for a reason and don’t want a nagging pop-up to annoy them. Basically, the Chrome update pop-ups are bad.
Mycinema.pro’s page about privacy settings might be okay as it has some good advice, if only it didn’t keep showing up all the time. It seems like it’s there just to get more people to look at the ads in the blog post.
Design and ads
Another problem is that it’s not entirely clear that Mycinema.pro is responsible for the pop-ups. Look at their design – if not for the “mycinema.pro” URL in the address bar, it would look like an imitation of official browser warnings. The problem is, again, they look like one of those actually malicious pop-ups shown by scam sites.
As Mycinema.pro is kind of promoting a specific browser extension (Click&Clean) and puts up ads for apps like MacKeeper (VirusTotal link), someone might initially get the impression that it’s Chrome recommending this software. There might be some benefit in at least labeling the pop-ups to make it clearer that it’s the Magic Actions extension that’s showing the ads.
It makes sense that the developer of Magic Actions wants to monetize their extension. But the ways they’re clumsily trying to get people to go to their website and look at some ads look like malware. Pop-ups, new windows in the background, requiring people to go to Mycinema.pro to change their Magic Actions settings – somewhat shady behavior that makes users unhappy for a reason.
How to stop the Mycinema.pro pop-ups
Unfortunately, I don’t know of a way to keep the extension while getting rid of the pop-ups. Ultimately, Mycinema.pro isn’t spreading malware or doing anything too dangerous. It’s just that the pop-ups are misleading, annoying, and unnecessary.
The truth is, you can never be sure about the reliability of extensions that require permission to see and change your data on all websites, like Mycinema.pro’s Magic Actions does. After checking out the permissions of other Youtube-enhancing Chrome add-ons, I only found one that was modest enough to only require access to youtube.com. I wonder if it was because the add-on was open-source and thus non-profit (a lot of extensions are for-profit, such as newtabs). All the other add-ons ask to see what you do on ALL the sites, which gives them enormous power. Be careful about what you install.
