MyConverterSearch Hijacker - How to remove

MyConverterSearch is a browser hijacker that makes browsers deliver search results in Yahoo. It gains control over the victim’s searches by changing the default search engine to Feed.myconvertersearch.com. It also sees the victim’s browsing data, including search terms and browsing history.

Luckily, MyConverterSearch can be uninstalled.

How to remove MyConverterSearch

Uninstall MyConverterSearch in browser settings or by opening your extension card (in Chrome, it’s the puzzle piece in the upper right), clicking the three-dot menu, and pressing Remove.

More on how to manage your web browser can be found at the bottom. Once MyConverterSearch is uninstalled, you should check your default search engine settings and choose which search engine you want. You should also check your other extensions.

Scan your computer with an antivirus program, like Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, or others. Then, if any potentially unwanted or malicious items are detected, remove them.

Once MyConverterSearch and other malware is gone, consider using an ad blocker and an anti-malware scanner to block malicious websites and unexpected ads. If you often visit sites that show dishonest advertisements, then it’s only a matter of time until you encounter a phishing site, a scam, or another threat.

MyConverterSearch asks to change your default search engine.

What is MyConverterSearch

MyConverterSearch is a browser add-on and an accompanying website. They aren’t exactly malicious. Rather, they are meant to force more people to use a partner link for a search site so that MyConverterSearch can make some money. It’s like an advertising company getting its hands on your browser.

Search engines are the websites that search the internet for us. But they’re also ad publishers – websites that display ads. So, there’s money in that. The more people use an ad-supported site, the more people click on ads, and the more money the site makes. MyConverterSearch makes money by hijacking people’s default search engine settings.

This is why, even though Yahoo is a legitimate search engine, it’s so often associated with hijackers (Yahoo Redirect Virus).

Besides hijacking searches, MyConverterSearch doesn’t really have any features. It’s not a converter of any kind, just like HDSportSearch has nothing to do with sports and how ConvertMySearch also has nothing to do with conversion (I wonder if the developers of these hijackers are running out of names).

How hijackers spread

This is the true problem with MyConverterSearch – dishonest advertising. Like this:

Download Ready template

This is basically a fake download button, but on a new tab page. If you’ve ever encountered such a page after clicking on a download link or button, then you either clicked a fake one, or the real button was set up to trigger an advertisement. Your might have also got it as a notification ad or had it recommended by another extension. However it happened, an ad for MyConverterSearch showed up and it looks like a download link. Another example is “Recommended extension”.

This sort of thing leads to people thinking that they have to install MyConverterSearch or other bad browser add-ons in order to access the content that they were trying to access before triggering the MyConverterSearch ad.

The real answer is to close your current browser tab and ignore any ad that is trying to get you to install something.

Whenever you’re downloading stuff from shady websites and an unexpected pop-up or redirect happens, breathe in and examine all of your open tabs, then close the ones that are suspicious. Luckily, the MyConverterSearch ads are not dangerous if you don’t interact with them, so you don’t need to be scared of these pages, only careful to not follow their instructions.
