MyShopSearch is an extension for Chrome and Chromium browsers. It allows users to search a few stores directly from their omnibox, but it takes over users’ search engine settings to deliver this. As a result, MyShopSearch can open unpredictable websites to deliver web search results. It can also track people’s search terms.
Not to mention, MyShopSearch’s one and only feature is an inferior version of the direct search feature that already exists in Google Chrome.
It’s best to remove MyShopSearch and scan your computer for other browser hijackers.

How does MyShopSearch work?
MyShopSearch is a browser add-on. It changes your default search engine, supposedly to help you search online stores.
MyShopSearch offers to help you search stores directly. You’re supposed to type in the name of one of the supported stores (amazon, ebay, etc.) followed by an asterisk ‘*’ and your search term.
It does work as advertised: if opens relevant search results of whatever store you specified. However, MyShopSearch also causes a few problems.
MyShopSearch replaces your search engine
When MyShopSearch is installed, it replaces your default search engine. This can cause your new tab/home page to look different. For instance, the search bar that used to be in the middle of the page might disappear.
In my case, MyShopSearch showed all search results in Google.com. This is a very popular search engine, so it shouldn’t annoy most people. But it is still a problem.
- What if you want to use a search engine other than Google.com?
- What if MyShopSearch decides to promote another search engine?
- When you use your address bar to search the web, Myshopsearch.com can read your search queries.
That last one is bad for privacy. Sure, sites like Google and Bing can already read your search history and may use it to show you targeted ads. But these sites also let you manage your search history by deleting entries or even opting out of ad targeting. MyShopSearch doesn’t offer such transparency.
It duplicates features
It’s very important to note that the feature that MyShopSearch offers – searching websites directly from your omnibox – is already present in the Google Chrome browser. You can add various websites to your list of search engines and specify the keywords to invoke them.
Meanwhile, MyShopSearch doesn’t even let users customize their list of search engines. At least the Chump hijacker lets you add new sites. So, if you use Google Chrome, then know that your browser by default has better “Shop Search” than MyShopSearch does.
You can also use bookmarks to quickly visit your favorite websites.
The F.txt bug
In some circumstances, MyShopSearch caused the F.txt bug for me. This is a pretty old bug where some ads or other websites cause your browser to download a file called F.txt. The file is harmless. The bug is usually caused by a broken advertisement, but in this case, it was MyShopSearch downloading search suggestions for my search query.
This is not a security problem, but I’m mentioning it in case you experienced this bug, too. It’s harmless and there’s no need to worry about it. Just delete the F files, as they’re useless.
How to delete MyShopSearch
As MyShopSearch is a browser add-on, you can remove it like any other add-on, as described in the instructions below.
Browser hijackers are often promoted by adware sites and other hijackers. For example, I first saw an ad for MyShopSearch when I was looking into Y2search.com. It could also be installed by other extensions and free programs.
If you experience excessive ads, browser redirects, and similar annoyances, it’s likely that there are other adware infections on your device. You can use anti-malware apps, like Spyhunter for Windows, Spyhunter for Mac, Malwarebytes, and others. They can scan your computer and warn you if any adware programs are found on your device.
