How Online Manuals App gets installed
Fake manuals sites
There are a bunch of fake manuals sites designed to spread Online Manuals App: first, people search for user manuals for specific devices, then these websites claim that they have the manual, only to open the installation page of Online Manuals App.
So, for example, Manualsearch.net is one site that people find when they search for instructions to phones, air fryers, fridges, and various other devices. It has a search bar and promises that it has manuals from thousands of brands. I went to Manualsearch.net, left the search box empty to see if they even check what I’m searching for, and then pressed the button to search. Then I got a pop-up saying that my manual is available (yeah, the “blank” manual) and to click the “Continue” button to access it. That button takes me to Online Manuals App’s installation page.
A few other sites, like Productmanuals.org and Findproductmanuals.com, didn’t even pretend to search for my manual and took me to Online Manuals App right away.
It’s not normal to find these fake sites in your web search. Do your web search results have more ads than usual? Do they include links to Kensaq.com, Zapmeta.cm, and similar sites? Adware can inject ads to your search results, you may have a bad browser extension. Temporarily disable all of your extensions and see if the ads go away.
Bundling
Another way that Online Manuals App may be distributed is via bundling. Bundling is when a free program has a few optional offers included with it. Like how Adobe Flash used to install McAfee. The optional offer is opted into by default and it’s on the user to refuse it – if they can catch it.
Often, it’s potentially unwanted programs that are bundled this way. In the worst cases, the opt-out options are hidden in pages that you might not even see during installation or your choices can be ignored and the additional software installed regardless.
If you installed some freeware before Online Manuals App showed up in your browser, check those programs with an anti-malware tool. They may have installed some offers that you didn’t notice.
Online Manuals App symptoms
First of all, Online Manuals App changes your new tab page to Onlinemanualsapptab.com. This page has a search box that leads to Yahoo.com and a toolbar with links to, among other sites, Manualsonline.com and Manualslib.com – two actually functional manual database sites. You can use these sites just fine without Online Manuals App.
Besides changing your new tab page, Online Manuals App reads your search queries, your location, what ads you clicked on, and some other details. This info is used to help advertisers know which ads will be most effective on you. So, you’ll probably see more targeted ads than before.
Finally, your address bar could also be hijacked. Online Manuals App is made by Eightpoint/Polarity and this company likes to offer Hide My Searches together with its extensions. That add-on constantly redirects from Google.com, Bing.com, and other search engines back to Hidemysearches.com even if you tell it not to. And it messes up some search boxes on unrelated websites, making them unusable.
How to remove Online Manuals App
First, remove malware from your computer. The easiest way to do that is to scan your device with an anti-malware program, for example, Combo Cleaner for Mac, SpyHunter for PC, and others. Sometimes, malicious programs download malware or stop it from being removed, so it’s important to make sure you haven’t got any of that.
Then, open your browser and remove all the suspicious extensions: Online Manuals App, Hide My Searches, etc. Also, disable or remove all the extensions that you don’t use. There is no need to let them access your browser if you’re not using them.
