OperativeProgram is Mac adware, spyware, a browser hijacker – a malicious app. Its main goal is likely to show ads to its victims and make money from that. In addition, it may sell the data it collects about its users. While it’s doing that, OperativeProgram may collect sensitive personal data, which could be bad for the victims’ privacy and security.
OperativeProgram is a dishonest app that can be tricky to delete – you need to find its files as well as the settings that it uses and remove them. Luckily, it’s completely doable on your own.

What is OperativeProgram?
Adware
OperativeProgram is a malicious app that changes your internet settings, changes how your browser works, all for two goals:
- To collect data about you.
- To control your browsing and force you to see ads and sponsored content.
In some ways, OperativeProgram is no different from other intrusive browser extensions: collecting data about your browsing habits to sell and share with advertisers. In theory, OperativeProgram could even swipe your passwords, payment info, etc. Hopefully, OperativeProgram’s operators or the platforms they share data with delete personal and sensitive information, but you never know. Extensions that sell data end up revealing a lot of private information, even without passwords.
OperativeProgram may also force your browser to open unusual sites, such as Yahoo.com or Searchmarquis.com, to search the internet.
It may also show unexpected pop-ups, crash online apps (browsers, email clients), and cause some websites to not open.
Overall, OperativeProgram is unhelpful and potentially bad for privacy.
Trojan
The way that OperativeProgram infects Macs is like a Trojan. It pretends to be an important software update. Or it is downloaded by another, unrelated free app.
After OperativeProgram is installed, it tries to add some browser extensions to Safari and other browsers. It also changes some of your settings to make sure that OperativeProgram opens when you start your computer and that, if you dare change the settings that OperativeProgram set, it rectifies that.
As a result, OperativeProgram is persistent and difficult to remove. It has a few components that work together to make sure they’re not deleted. For example, if you try to delete OperativeProgram, it might download another very similar app, such as TotalConsoleSearch, AssistiveFile, and others without even warning you.
When you’re removing OperativeProgram, it is good to find and delete all of its files and settings at once.
How to remove OperativeProgram
Here’s an OperativeProgram removal checklist:
- Start your Mac in safe mode. This will stop OperativeProgram and other unnecessary apps from running on startup.
- Find and remove all malware. Manually and/or with an antivirus program.
- Check your settings, including startup, network, and configuration profile settings.
- If needed, delete malicious files.
Remove malware
To get to safe mode, shut down your Mac, then start it again and hold the Shift key until you see the loading bar on your screen. More on Support.apple.com.
Your antivirus app may ask you to reboot in safe mode, too.
Now, find and delete the OperativeProgram app (Finder -> Applications), browser extension, other apps, download files (installers), and extensions. If you need to, use an anti-malware app, such as Combo Cleaner, Malwarebytes, and others.
Fix the settings
At the same time, you need to find what changes OperativeProgram made to your settings and fix them. Some of these settings are important and help OperativeProgram remain installed and running, so they need to be fixed as soon as possible:
- System Preferences -> Users & Groups -> Login Items. Select and remove (press the minus ‘-‘ button) all unfamiliar or unwanted items.
- System Preferences -> Profiles. Delete all unfamiliar profiles.
- System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> Proxies. If an unfamiliar proxy is configured, deselect it and click OK.
- System Preferences -> Extensions. Delete all unfamiliar or unwanted extensions.
Delete malicious files
This isn’t necessary unless your anti-malware app missed some files. In Finder, click Go -> Computer, type in “OperativeProgram”, and delete all found files.
You may also, in Finder, open Go -> Go to Folder and navigate to these folders:
- ~/Library/LaunchAgents
- ~/Library/Application Support
- /Library/Application Support
- /Library/LaunchDaemons
Find all the files that don’t appear to belong to any app that you have. You need to delete malicious files while leaving legitimate files intact. Use file preview, check dates on which the files were added, make file backups, then delete suspicious files.
