PasswordLogic Browser Hijacker - How to remove

PasswordLogic is a browser hijacker that barely has any useful features. It’s best to not use it to avoid having your browsing history exposed to even more advertisers and your new tab replaced with the ugly PasswordLogic tab. Also, PasswordLogic is detected by antivirus programs and is adjacent to malware and adware, so it’s a good idea to check your computer for malicious stuff.

What is PasswordLogic?

Once PasswordLogic is installed, it sets hp.myway.com/passwordlogic/ttab02/index.html as your new tab page. Now, when you open a new tab in your browser, this site opens. And it contains all of PasswordLogic’s functionality.

On one hand, PasswordLogic does have some utility:

• It has a pop-up that generates strings of random characters to serve as examples of strong passwords. They’re too hard to remember, so it’s baffling what the use of it is.
• PasswordLogic also has a pop-up that checks the strength of passwords. It’s mildly useful but you should probably not type any of your real passwords in there.

Besides these two pop-ups, PasswordLogic offers a bunch of links to unrelated websites talking about how to create a strong password. Also, there are a lot of links to random sites, like online radio, Facebook, online task scheduler, and a few stores.

But the outdated and impractical design of the PasswordLogic new tab stares us in the face. This is how Mindspark’s extensions have been for years and they have barely improved at all: MetroWhiz, YourTemplateFinder, LearnTheLyrics, and its other extensions look almost the same. There are dozens if not hundreds.

PasswordLogic doesn’t need to take over your new tab page except to hijack your search and show you ads on your new tab page. Other than that, it could exist perfectly well as an extension pop-up, like most normal browser extensions. And you would still be able to customize your new tab page yourself.

Though, that would still allow PasswordLogic to read your browsing history, which is not good.

So, even though PasswordLogic does have some redeeming qualities, it’s ultimately a browser hijacker – a mild form of malware. And malware researchers agree with this verdict. Here’s PasswordLogic’s VirusTotal report – 36 antivirus detections out of 67.

How the hijacker gets installed

PasswordLogic has a few avenues to get on your computer:

• it could come bundled with a free program,
• it could be bundled with another browser extension,
• or it’s advertised online and installed manually.

Using the first way, PasswordLogic might appear on your computer seemingly out of nowhere.  Pay-per-install schemes are great for potentially unwanted programs. Install a photo editor, a streaming program, or whatever else could end with a bunch of junkware on your computer.

PasswordLogic is probably installed together with Search Extension by Ask. Maybe also MyFormsFinder, DownSpeedTest, etc. This works by starting the installation of one extension, then immediately loading another extension, sometimes with a half-filled loading bar to give you the impression that you still haven’t finished installing the first one. Which is a pretty dishonest way of doing things.

You could also install PasswordLogic on your own. Either because of its description, which may imply that it’s a password generator of some kind, or thanks to deceptive ads, such as fake download buttons on download sites.

One way you might be able to avoid installing hijackings on your browser is by scanning the files you download with an anti-malware program.

How to remove PasswordLogic

Check if your device has malware. You can do that by reviewing your programs (Control Panel -> Programs for Windows) and applications (Finder -> Applications for Mac OS), especially what you installed around or before the time that PasswordLogic showed up.

Alternatively, you can scan your device with an anti-malware program, such as SpyHunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for Mac OS, and other reputable tools. They can detect malicious and potentially unwanted browser extensions and programs for you.

As for removing PasswordLogic from your browser, you can do that on your own. Usually, it’s enough to right-click the extension’s icon next to your address bar and choose the “Remove” option, but the instructions below have more in-depth settings.
