PCSpeedCAT PUP - How to remove

PCSpeedCAT says that it can improve your computer’s speed, but it’s more likely to just hog your PC resources while it asks you to buy the paid version. Though it is not a virus, PCSpeedCAT has the ability to harm a computer, weaken its security, and just does not provide useful features.

PCSpeedCAT is a potentially unwanted program that claims to optimize your computer’s performance. It’s detected as malicious by many reputable antivirus programs.

How PCSpeedCAT is promoted

PCSpeedCAT has a slick website that presents it as an innovative and creative solution to optimizing your PC. But it’s enough to skim the descriptions to see that “innovative” is the worst description for PCSpeedCAT. This program takes existing Windows settings and pretends that it came up with them and presents them on its website as some sort of advanced technology.

But the home page is not the only place where this program is promoted. There are pages online which claim that PCSpeedCAT finds and fixes Windows errors and is a valuable tool for fixing corrupted system files. This might be referring to the registry management that PCSpeedCAT does, but registry errors are only a small portion of errors that can trouble a Windows computer. PCSpeedCAT being presented as a universal cure for any PC troubles is going to leave those who install it disappointed.

PCSpeedCAT is almost no different PC Speedup Pro, PC Optimizer Pro, or all the other optimizers that profit by lying.

Why is it “unwanted”?

With its scheduled scans, PCSpeedCAT is likely to have more negative impact to your PC’s performance than it can optimize. Besides, the program can accidentally harm a computer’s settings by messing with the registry, other settings that really shouldn't be messed with by a third party program. PCSpeedCAT claims that it can speed up a computer by deleting unnecessary ones, but there’s no evidence of that.

A lot of the optimization changes that PCSpeedCAT offers are tiny and cosmetic, such as disabling the minimizing animations and shadows under the windows. If you like what PCSpeedCAT does here, that’s great — but you should know that the functions are already available in Windows natively. Like all PUP optimizers, PCSpeedCAT pretends that it’s doing something, but really it’s just accessing the functions that Windows has already provided: startup manager and the visual effects manager can be accessed without any third party applications (just search for “Advanced system settings”, then pick the “Advanced” tab and the “settings button under “Performance”). Windows even has tools for checking the integrity of system files and deleting junk. But PCSpeedCAT doesn’t enable people to manage these settings. Instead, it tries to monetize the process and won’t fix the majority of the “problems” it finds until you purchase the paid version.

As for these “problems”, while PCSpeedCAT claims to restore your PC to the speed that it used to have — “give it back the speed and control it was born with” –, it has issues with brand new PCs, too. If a newly installed operating system is not good enough, what is? A lot of fake optimizers constantly, periodically find problems that they want to fix. This scanning process is usually very quick and simple, the problems being fixed easily and satisfyingly, with a click of a button. Whether anything is actually happening under the hood or simple animations of loading bars are being played to fool the user varies with each program, but the latter is more common. Some fake optimizers have tried to modify people’s registry entries and had problems with breaking people’s operating systems, so it’s probably for the best that they don’t touch anything important.
