How to remove PDFSearchly
Remove PDFSearchly and other malicious browser add-ons. You can do it manually and we have the instructions at the bottom.
To check your computer for malware and potentially unwanted items, you can use anti-malware apps, like Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, and others.
Review the settings of your browser and see if any extensions are listed as being in control over those settings. If you see some unexpected, unknown, or unwanted extensions there, remove them so that you can get back control over your browser.
There’s actually one setting that PDFSearchly can affect even when it’s removed and even when it’s never been installed to begin with: web push notifications. If you see ads and other messages labeled with the “Pdfsearchly.com” address, you can block them by clicking on the Site settings button on one of these pop-ups. You can also review which sites are able to send you notifications in browser settings:
- Chrome – open Settings, scroll down to Site settings (under Privacy and security), click on Notifications.
- Edge (Chromium) – open Settings, click Site Permissions, Notifications.
- Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
- Firefox – open Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
How PDFSearchly works
It spies on its users
It replaces your default search engine with PDFSearchly.
This causes your web search to behave strangely:
- Your home page and new tab page looks a little different. For instance, where there used to be a search box, it went away.
- Unfamiliar URLs appear in your address bar.
- A lot of redirects happen before you ever get to see your search results.
- Your search results are delivered by unexpected websites, like Mybrowser-search.com.
- Sites reload unexpectedly, their layout changes, more ads appear.
The PDFSearchly extension causes your browser to open certain websites. Most likely, the people who made PDFSearchly live off the money made from ads and affiliate links. They might be using PDFSearchly and similar extensions (SuperPDFSearch, BestSearchConverter, etc.) to force more people to visit those links and see those ads.
In addition to forcing its users to visit unwanted sites, PDFSearchly spies on them by reading their browsing histories and search logs. Its operators may share this data with other companies for mundane commercial purposes because they actually consider search logs to be non-personal information! This is not good for privacy.
It infiltrates browsers secretly
There’s almost no way that people install PDFSearchly voluntarily. It has no helpful features whatsoever, so nobody would want to add it to their browser if they knew what it did. And besides, there’s no way to find the PDFSearchly extension if you don’t have its exact address – it appears that its operators would like it to remain a secret.
The only way to find this extension is to encounter an advertisement for it:
- Ads inside installers for free programs (for example, InstallCore).
- Ads displayed by various websites, usually pop-ups that vaguely encourage or pressure you to download or install something.
PDFSearchly essentially tricks people into installing it.
Once PDFSearchly is installed, it’s not very obvious. You definitely notice the redirects and ads, but you might not know what’s causing them.
In case of browser troubles, it’s always recommended to check your extensions first. Experiment by disabling them and seeing if that makes the problems go away. Don’t ignore even the most trusted extensions. If you find the culprit, remove it and try to remember how it got on your browser originally. Knowing how your computer might be vulnerable to threats will make it easier for you to avoid them in the future.
