What is ProManagerRecord?
ProManagerRecord opens unwanted websites
ProManagerRecord is a mysterious browser extension that you might find installed on your browser. It is an extremely powerful extension: it can control the browser and read user data. ProManagerRecord makes web search results be shown by unexpected websites (like the Yahoo search engine). It can open new browser tabs, show more advertisements, read all the data on the websites that you visit.
In other words, ProManagerRecord is a browser hijacker: a malicious extension that controls the browser and changes its settings in unhelpful ways.
Users have complained about ProManagerRecord on Mac-help.com and on Discussions.apple.com, looking for ways to get rid of this malware.
We’ve seen similar adware infections. OpticalRatePro, OriginalUnitValue, and other Mac adware has been noticed infecting Mac browsers. These malicious apps hijack internet search traffic, but they can cause other problems (such as logging search history and browsing history).
It’s hard to know who the people behind ProManagerRecord are, but they likely make money from affiliate links and advertisements. The more people visit a certain website, the more ads they see, the more money the ad publisher makes.
ProManagerRecord is installed without permission
Malicious actors also don’t ask people to install the ProManagerRecord extension; they sneak it in without permission.
One popular way to infect Macs with adware is to show malicious ads: fake update warnings, fake security alerts. These alerts insist that users must download and install an app to fix the (nonexistent) problem. iOS devices are constantly targeted with these malicious scam ads that install fleeceware: Potential risk of unsecured connection, Your device is currently infected with a Trojan virus!, Hacker is tracking you!, etc. Macs are also targeted, but their ads are more likely to be fake macOS, browser, Flash Player update prompts.
The malicious advertisements download a file that might look safe at first. However, it installs ProManagerRecord or other adware infections.
Once installed, ProManagerRecord is extremely persistent. If you try to remove it like a normal extension, you might run into the “Your browser is managed” problem (Installed by enterprise policy (fake)).
Some browsers allow organizations to manage them: block websites, install extensions, etc. This allows schools and companies to control how their computers are used, which is very important for cybersecurity.
Malicious actors abuse this functionality to force malicious add-ons to stay installed on web browsers.
How to delete ProManagerRecord
