Propeller Ads is a legitimate advertising network that was and might be misused by criminals. The advertisements from it are served from Ad.propellerads.com and might be signed. If you are see the Propeller Ads on some page, it is likely that they are legitimate. However, when you start getting popups on various pages or when browser is closed, you might be infected with Fireball or other adware related to this network.
Why We list Propeller Ads under Adware
Advertising networks help website makers earn money by helping them sell ads. Lots of such networks are legitimate, in fact Google Adsense/Adwords is one as well. The problem is screening of advertisers, their ads and the people that displays them. For example, Propeller network was used to distribute Trojans and rogue anti-spyware ads in the past.
Additionaly, there are some cases when propeller ads were used by malware rather than website itself. For example, one of the users of Propeller Ads stated that he/she installed its software voluntarily. However, the person was surprised that he/she got introduced with offers to update Adobe Flash Player and this feature seemed fishy. Also, Propeller Ads were used by Rafotech company, which was closed by police for Distributing adware in July 2017, which related to adware like Dealwifi and ELEX . So Propeller media claim that they screen their offers for malware might be false.
The advertisement network track they users to get more information about the sites they visit and preferences. To find out more about the data that this application allows itself to collect, we took a closer look at the Privacy Policy of this facility. Just as we suspected, Propeller Ads are brought to users not completely randomly, but they are actually selected according to the users’ browsing habits. These tailored promotions are going to be introduced on random websites that participate in the Propeller Ads. As for the information that might be collected, it can vary from all sort of data. However, personally-identifiable information is stated to not be collected by this facility. But non-personally identifiable information is enough to select advertisements that would catch users’ attention.
Propeller Ads is a legitimate advertising network. However, even these facilities have flaws and they sometimes do not appropriately scan the advertisements to be brought to Internet users. That might be the reason behind the fact that people said to receive notifications to install Adobe Flash Players: because this potentially harmful notification did not trigger any protectors. If the criteria for advertisements would be higher, then maybe so much misleading third-party promotions would not be displayed to Internet users so frequently.
Propeller Ads are said to be quite irritating as their most common form is full-screen ads, pop-under ads, push ads and other annoying shapes. I suggest scanning PC for malware if you see such advertisement often or if you clicked and installed something from these ads. If you feel like your computer is infected, please run a full security scan to see the things that will get detected. You can choose from a lot of anti-malware tools, but we recommend you to try Spyhunter.
