What is ProSearchConverter?
Installed unintentionally
ProSearchConverter is a browser extension. You can install it after being prompted to by an advertisement on Prosearchconverter.com.
Interestingly, you can’t find ProSearchConverter by searching for it. The only way to get it is to encounter an ad for it. You might do that while browsing free movie sites, torrenting sites, file download sites, and similar places online. That’s to say, ProSearchConverter gets promoted on controversial sites, such as those used to pirate content.
It’s advertised without much of a description, often with just a button that says “Download” or “Download Now”. Indeed, as it’s advertised by pop-ups that just appear in new browser tabs, you could easily mistake them for real download buttons for whatever file you were trying to download. This could easily result in ProSearchConverter being installed by accident.
When people encounter pushy ads like those used by ProSearchConverter, sometimes they assume that they must install the extension in order to continue browsing. That’s not true – you’re free to ignore ProSearchConverter’s promos.
During its installation, you can see what permissions this extension needs in order to function:
- read your data on Prosearchconverter.com sites,
- read your browsing history,
- change your default search engine to Feed.prosearchconverter.com.
From these permissions, it’s clear that ProSearchConverter is a search hijacker. If you see that you’re about to install an extension that’ll change your search settings and if you didn’t expect that, just cancel the installation.
It makes unhelpful changes to browser settings
ProSearchConverter changes your default search settings. It sets Feed.prosearchconverter.com as your default search engine. If you go into your browser settings and look at what your search engine is, ProSearchConverter should be listed there.
That and its info tracking are the main features of this extension.
From ProSearchConverter’s name, you might suspect that it has something to do with converting file types or something – but it doesn’t. It is just a search hijacker, nothing more.
Because of it, when you search the web, Yahoo or another unexpected site delivers the results. These results might take a little longer to appear thanks to being redirected through Feed.prosearchconverter.com. And they might show a few more ads than Yahoo normally shows, as an affiliate link is being used. It’s possible that ProSearchConverter is making a bit of money every time you search the web through it.
And where privacy is concerned, ProSearchConverter is able to read your browsing history and your search terms. Ordinarily, your search terms are between you and your search engine. Now, ProSearchConverter is listening. If it wanted to, it could even change what website opens and what your search query is. It has a lot of control over your web search experience.
How to remove ProSearchConverter
You can stop Prosearchconverter.com from taking over your searches by just removing the ProSearchConverter extension.
Remove unwanted browser extensions and suspicious programs manually and with an anti-malware program, such as Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, and others. It’s very possible that ProSearchConverter is not the only malicious add-on installed.
Also, check your notification settings, since Prosearchconverter.com might have asked you to subscribe to its ads:
- Chrome – open Settings, scroll down to Site settings (under Privacy and security), click on Notifications.
- Edge (Chromium) – open Settings, click Site Permissions, Notifications.
- Firefox – open Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
- Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
Look for other potentially unwanted websites, too.
You can use ad blockers and anti-malware apps to protect yourself from sites like Prosearchconverter.com, Researchconverter.com, Fast2captcha.com, etc. Well, not always, as such websites don’t always get detected by anti-malware programs. But they can still improve your security, even if they only block some malicious sites.
