How Push.machineflame.online takes over browsers
In order to show ads on your screen, Push.machineflame.online needs permission from your browser. The site asks the browser to show the “website wants to show notifications” alert. You, the user, then have to click the “Allow” button to enable the site to send notifications to your browser.
People don’t normally agree to let random sites send them messages. But Push.machineflame.online has a trick, it knows just how to trick people.
In my case, Push.machineflame.online showed a message that said:
Download is ready.
Click Allow to download your file.
And the ad for Push.machineflame.online appeared on a file download site. It showed up when I clicked the Download button for that file.
In theory, distracted users should see this message and click the “Allow” button (and unwittingly subscribe to Push.machineflame.online’s ads) because they think that’ll let them finish downloading the file they were trying to get.
Other notification hijackers use messages like Click Allow to win a prize and Press Allow to continue to trick people.
Problems with notification spam
Push.machineflame.online and other notification spammers tend to show low-quality, dangerous ads. Ads that might not get accepted on mainstream sites:
- Links to fake articles and ads for counterfeit goods, unregulated medicines, get-rich-quick schemes, and psychic gurus.
- Ads for adult content, such as explicit videos and gambling sites.
- Fake giveaways, phishing sites, subscription scams.
That already takes ads from Push.machineflame.online from just annoying and distracting to potentially dangerous. But it gets worse.
Some malicious sites leverage the notification format to deceive their victims even more. They disguise their notifications as macOS and Windows alerts, often virus alerts, in order to trick people into clicking on them. On mobile devices, notification spammers like Push.machineflame.online can disguise their ads to look like messages, phone calls, and social media notifications.
The fake virus alerts shown by Push.machineflame.online and other hijackers might lead to harmless (though annoying) websites. but sometimes, they promote fleeceware, fake PC cleaners and optimizers, and even tech support scams: potentially truly harmful content.
How to stop ads from Push.machineflame.online
It’s a good idea to protect your computer with an antivirus program, such as Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, and others. Especially if you downloaded anything that was promoted by one of Push.machineflame.online’s ads.
As for stopping Push.machineflame.online’s ads, find it and other unwanted sites in your notification settings and switch their permission from “Allow” to “Block” in the drop-down to the right of each address.
Luckily, you can disable notifications in your browser settings. You can even disable them from the notifications themselves if the “Site settings” button or a gear button is visible.
Here are the instructions to open the settings page:
- Chrome – open Settings, scroll down to Site settings (under Privacy and security), click on Notifications.
- Edge (Chromium) – open Settings, click Site Permissions, Notifications.
- Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
- Firefox – open Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
Also, you might want to disable notification prompts completely. That way, notification hijackers won’t be able to get you. They’ll either harmlessly display their message (in Push.machineflame.online’s case, asking you to click “Allow”) with no notification prompt visible, or they’ll immediately redirect to an advertised website.
