How Pushisback.com tricks people

Browser notifications are great. They are little messages sent from a website to a browser. They can let you know about new emails in your inbox, new direct messages, and new posts on your favorite blog. The little pop-up in the corner can be dismissed or followed quickly and easily. And because a site requires permission to show notifications, you won’t see these pop-ups unless you want to.

Unfortunately, notifications were noticed by advertising firms and malicious actors. They can be used to send advertisements from a website to browsers, without needing people to actually visit the website.

Pushisback.com is one such malicious site. It shows misleading screens to trick people into subscribing to its notifications. Then, it sends advertisements to those who have, unwittingly, allowed them. Pushisback.com has a few strategies for getting permission to send notifications, but they all boil down to telling people to click “Allow” and hoping that they do not check what they’re agreeing to. Pushisback.com’s lies include phrases like:

  • “Click Allow to confirm you are not a robot”,
  • “Please click the Allow button to watch the video”,
  • “Please click Allow in order to continue”.

Pushisback.com lies to visitors about what the Allow button does. It asks the browser to show the notification pop-up, where clicking Allow would mean that the browser now accepts pop-ups from Pushisback.com. Unfortunately, a lot of people fail to notice this detail – they’re just trying to get on with their web browsing, so they quickly click Allow and then move on. Notification abuse is a big enough problem that some browsers try to hide the prompts so that nobody can accept them by accident.

Only to be pelted with pop-ups from Pushisback.com right in their own web browser.

Problems with unwanted ads

Pushisback.com is just one of many notification spammers. Sites like it include Check-message.live, Check-this-out-now.online, Private-show.live, 1000-dollar.cash, and others. These sites promote each other all the time. Some of them are short-lived and don’t have much of a concern to remain discreet. This means that the ad-spam can get crazy, up to multiple ads per minute.

And a lot of the ads by Pushisback.com are deceptive, including:

  • fake social media updates,
  • fake warnings about a virus infection,
  • get-rich-quick links and other scams,
  • suspicious health supplements supported by made-up testimonies,
  • fake giveaways and lotteries that only exist to get your personal information,
  • fake or extremely misleading subscription services,
  • browser hijackers.

There are some normal ads shown by Pushisback.com, too. But they all come uninvited and provide no value. They just distract, steal time, and take up screen space. While potentially spreading malicious content that could result in malware infections. Here are a couple of ads fro browser hijackers that Pushisback.com showed me:

How to stop Pushisback.com ads

Pushisback.com uses notifications to send its pop-up ads, so the way to stop it is to simply revoke its permission to send you notifications. This can be done in browser settings. You can block all notifications, or you can manage each individual website’s permissions:

  • Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
  • New Edge – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Firefox – open Settings, Preferences, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.

When you find the list of sites that have permission to send you notifications, you are free to block/deny or remove any of them. This setting is reversible. Blocking just prevents Pushisback.com from sending any more notifications or asking you to accept them. Removing it does the same, but allows Pushisback.com to ask you to allow notifications again.

You may also want to scan your computer with antivirus programs, such as Spyhunter for PC, Combo Cleaner for Mac, and others. Scan results would show if there’s any malware on the device that needs to be removed.
