Quicklivenews.com New Tab - How to remove

Quicklivenews.com is a new tab page that belongs to the Quick Live News extension. Quick Live News gets installed, replaces your default new tab with Quicklivenews.com, and reads your browsing history. It is supposed to enhance your browser with new features, but really, it just limits your customization options. Quicklivenews.com is not dangerous, but it only exists to advertise to you. It’s best to remove it as soon as you discover it.

The installation of Quicklivenews.com

If you regularly see Quicklivenews.com in your browser but you aren’t sure why, then you might have accidentally installed Quick Live News on your browser. How exactly this happened is up for you to determine but I can suggest a couple of possibilities.

Checking the web analytics on Quicklivenews.com, it appears that some of the people who end up on this site were looking online for news sites like CNN, FOX, ABC, and others. They end up on Quicklivenews.com, which is a tiny and unrelated site that’s just pushing a browser extension called Quick Live News.

The reason this happens is that they were searching for news on dubious search engines like Index.about.com, Searchincognito.com, Hidemyhistory.co, etc. These search engines are more part of an advertising scheme and they spread through bad browser extensions, just like Quick Live News.

People would search for news sites, then click on a search result ad. Quicklivenews.com opens and offers them access to the news if they click the “Continue” button.

Read the latest articles across popular news categories and stay updated with what’s happening daily in the world.

The Continue button just opens the installation for the Quick Live News extension. For me, it also offered Safeplex Search.

Alternatively, Quick Live News can be offered together with a free program whose installer was wrapped in a bundler. Some installers offer a bunch of additional programs before installing the program or app that you actually downloaded. This sort of dishonest advertising is called dark patterns and it’s something to watch out for online.

Whatever happened in your case, it’s possible that you installed Quick Live News without wanting to.

Quicklivenews.com offers to install Safeplex Search.

How Quick Live News

Then, Quicklivenews.com replaces your new tab page. Does it really give you “Full Access” to news? Well, it does have a few menus at the top of the page which include links to prominent news sites.

It also tries to hijack your searches by directing your search queries to Search.Yahoo.com.

Overall, Quicklivenews.com lacks features. It has a few links to a few websites, which is not worth replacing your new tab page for. You could create bookmarks and save your favorite website on your new tab page (go to the site you want to save, press Ctrl and D on Windows or Cmd+D on macOS, and you can save that site for quick access). But Quicklivenews.com replaces that new tab page in your browser. One could say that it actually takes features away from the browser by restricting your ability to choose and manage your new tab.

If Safeplex Search was installed, too, it changes the search engine. This takes over your address box, sending your queries to Yahoo, and puts a checkmark next to each search result indicating that they’re safe. Considering how Safeplex Search is disliked by some reputable antiviruses, you probably shouldn’t trust Safeplex too much.

Quicklivenews.com and other hijackers are just advertising applications:

  • Quicklivenews.com seeks to show you notification ads,
  • it reads your browsing history,
  • it ignores your search engine preferences and redirects the searches from Quicklivenews.com to Search.yahoo.com,
  • it recommends an additional extension to be installed.

Quick Live News is made by Innover Group, the same company that has released Getquickdirections.com, Findmanualsnow.com, and other browser extensions that also hijack new tabs and redirect searches.

How to remove Quicklivenews.com

To get rid of the Quicklivenews.com new tab hijacker, you would need to find and remove the Quick Live News browser extension. That’s easy enough to do – just open the affected browser, look in the top right corner for Quick Live News’ icon (a gray little newspaper), right-click it, and click on the “Remove” option. If you can’t remove it because it’s “installed by enterprise policy” or something similar, this makes things a little more complicated, so check out this post.

But Quick Live News might not be the only potentially unwanted item installed on your browser. Carefully review all of the extensions that you’ve got on your browser. Check their developers, their privacy policies, and their permissions. Evaluate if the extension descriptions justify the permissions they’re asking for (Support.google.com).

You can use anti-malware programs, such as Combo Cleaner for Mac, Spyhunter for PC, and others to review all of your extensions and other programs. If the scan detects some adware or PUPs (potentially unwanted programs), then you should consider removing those items, or at least review them yourself.

You can check if you agreed for Quicklivenews.com to send notifications to your browser by opening notification settings:

  • Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
  • New Edge – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Firefox – open Settings, Preferences, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.

There are two lists here: the sites that you’ve blocked notifications from and the sites you’ve allowed to show messages on your screen. If the latter list includes Quicklivenews.com, you might want to block notifications from it.
