QuickMovie Tab - How to remove

QuickMovie Tab is a browser add-on. It’s related to the Quickmovietab.com website. Once it’s installed, it replaces your new tab page with a movie-themed webpage. In addition, QuickMovie Tab says that it uses Bing to replace your search engine, although that doesn’t necessarily bear out in reality.

The QuickMovie Tab add-on is a potentially unwanted program or even a browser hijacker and it’s advisable to remove it from your browser.

Is QuickMovie Tab safe?

QuickMovie Tab replaces the new tab page

QuickMovie Tab is a browser add-on (a little app that gets attached to your browser) that’s supposed to help you find info on movies.

I first became suspicious of it after seeing iits “Download Ready” ad page. This template is used often by legitimately malicious browser add-ons, like Private Video, PBlock+, and other search hijackers. This made me suspicious of QuickMovie Tab and I wanted to investigate.

QuickMovie Tab is a movie-themed extension. You can check it out on Quickmovietab.com, it lets you search for movie trailers and actor biographies. It appears to use a version of a movie review site template found on Github.

Once QuickMovie Tab is installed, it replaces your home page/new tab page with its own movie-themed page, adds a few links to websites that it thinks might be useful (like Google+ – thanks, QuickMovie Tab!), and a search box in the middle of the page. There seems to be no way to modify this new tab page.

It offers to change your search settings

According to QuickMovie Tab’s description in the Chrome Web Store, it replaces your search settings and has Bing deliver your web search results. But, in my case, it used Google.com to search the web.

This mismatch could be because it might not be in QuickMovie Tab’s control how it delivers web search results. According to its privacy policy, it uses CodeFuel – a framework for monetizing apps.

Replacing your search settings is something that extensions do to make money. What separates a legitimate extension from a browser hijacker is not always very clear. I think a legitimate extension should have these features:

  • It should offer useful functionality.
  • It should be honest about its monetization.
  • Its ads should be honest.

It’s difficult to see why anyone would want to use QuickMovie Tab. It seems like an extension made just to take control over people’s browsers and influence how they search the web – just like any other browser hijacker. Although, rather than being dangerous, QuickMovie Tab is just a potentially unwanted program.

How to remove QuickMovie Tab

Uninstall the QuickMovie Tab extension.

Browser add-ons have a lot of power over your browser and a lot of access to your data, so it’s important to only allow trustworthy extensions to be installed and enabled.

Here are some reasons for removing or disabling an add-on:

  • You don’t remember installing it and it’s a third-party extension.
  • You don’t use it.
  • Its permissions are excessive and aren’t justified by its features.
  • There’s not enough information about its privacy policy and its developers.
  • It’s not clear how the extension makes its money.

QuickMovie Tab and other add-ons can be removed in your settings or the extension area (the puzzle button to the right of your browser’s address bar). You can also disable the extensions that you’re unsure of but don’t want to remove completely.

You could also use anti-malware apps to remove bad browser extensions, but with PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) like QuickMovie Tab, it’s unlikely that antivirus programs will flag it.

However, in case there are other potentially unwanted programs, adware, or malware on your computer, it’s a good idea to scan it with antivirus tools, such as Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, and others. If they detect some suspicious files and programs on your device, you can remove them.
