QuickTemplateFinder, or Printable Templates by QuickTemplateFinder, is a browser extension. It might seem useful to those who frequently need to print various invitations, forms, cards, menus, etc. Unfortunately, this add-on is a browser hijacker, a type of adware that takes over important browser settings to force users to visit specific websites. In the case of QuickTemplateFinder, that site it MyWay.

QuickTemplateFinder is not a serious virus, it’s not going to steal your passwords or force you to visit phishing sites (though some malicious extensions can do that). Still, this add-on causes some problems for some users. Unwanted installation, hijacking of the new tab and the search provider, and pushing related browser add-ons explain why so many antivirus programs have a problem with QuickTemplateFinder.
This browser add-on is a Newtab virus, a low-effort clone of other hijackers by the same company. It’s not helpful or useful, but neither is it illegal.

How QuickTemplateFinder gets installed
This extension is not necessary to access printable templates and QuickTemplateFinder’s functionality can easily be replaced by adding bookmarks to the sites you want to access quickly. So why does it have tens of thousands of users?
A lot of people find QuickTemplateFinder when they search for a free template to print, an online print design application, even meme makers. They end up on QuickTemplateFinder.com, the site that instructs users to install the QuickTemplateFinder add-on in their browser. This page might open when trying to download their design or as a normal ad.
When a website insists that, in order to continue using it, you need to install an extension or subscribe to notifications, just close the tab. Most of the time, it’s a malicious website spreading some adware.
By the way, bundlers can spread adware too – distributors include junkware in the installers of free programs because they’re paid for every successful installation of those inclusions. If QuickTemplateFinder just showed up in your browser one day, think if you recently downloaded some free application from a shady website.
QuickTemplateFinder is not exactly forced on people, but some misleading tactics are used to push it. Just know that you can always quit an installation that you don’t completely trust (to close a browser tab, use Cmd+W if you’re on a Mac and Alt+F4 if you’re on a PC). Scan every setup file and don’t invite shady software on your computer.
QuickTemplateFinder is adware
QuickTemplateFinder is released by Mindspark, a company associated with Ask Applications. It is based on the same template that most of the hijackers are – a new tab page with a search bar in the middle and a bunch of links to various websites related to the theme of the extension. Occasionally, the main website is made by Ask themselves, like in the case of QuickTemplateFinder, YourTemplateFinder, and GetFormsOnline. Other times, a third-party site delivers the functionality. In both cases, the extensions is not needed for using the site.
You can use QuickTemplateFinder for free, but it does make money for the company that made it. QuickTemplateFinder promotes the MyWay search engine, as well as Ask.com. These sites use ads to make money and the more users they have, the more money they can make from advertising.
Advertising makes a lot of money, especially targeted ads, and hey, QuickTemplateFinder has access to your search terms which would otherwise be encrypted. Respectable search engines encrypt users’ search terms to protect their privacy, but this makes it difficult for advertisers to know what you like. QuickTemplateFinder gets access to your browser and can see your search history and search queries.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with all of this provided that you’re informed about it all and find QuickTemplateFinder useful. But Mindspark has a history of aggressively pushing their products to the point where people find them installed in their browser with no idea where they came from – and then the “Remove” button doesn’t even work. There’s no need to tolerate this browser-hijacking nuisance, you deserve better.
