Notifications used for evil
Web push notifications are messages from a website to a browser. Normal websites may use them to update you on a new email in your inbox, on a new direct message, or your favorite blog posting a new essay. But malicious sites like Read-this-hot-stuff.today use them to spam you with unwanted ads. This is just like spam mail, but more dangerous and harder to ignore.
Read-this-hot-stuff.today isn’t above sending deceptive notifications that are made to look like virus alerts, new emails, social media messages – that turn out to be adult chat services, trading scams, and fake antivirus programs. They waste your time and could trick you into wasting your money, too.
Not to mention, getting these sorts of pop-ups from Read-this-hot-stuff.today on your work device can be really distracting and especially embarrassing. It’s too easy to accidentally click on a notification when trying to close it.
Why Read-this-hot-stuff.today’s ads are so bad
Read-this-hot-stuff.today shows advertisements for normal stuff, like a product that you were looking up earlier (and don’t doubt that it uses third-party tracking to spy on you), but many of its notifications are stuff that you’re unlikely to see on normal websites:
- Fake stories trying to sell dubious medical items. They often have a fake expert talk about a new invention to help with some serious illness or with weight loss. These stories often steal photos for their witnesses and experts and use made-up names, so they’re pretty easy to figure out.
- Similarly, fake stories advertising investment, options trading, and new cryptocurrency schemes. These are more dangerous because desperate people sometimes put their savings into these scams, only to lose it all. These sometimes use celebrity faces to look more convincing.
- Fake lottery wins and giveaways might show up in Read-this-hot-stuff.today notifications. They offer you a free phone, thousands of dollars, a new car – but ask you to provide your personal information and pay a bunch of fees to get your prize. Every victim is told they won and there is no prize.
- Virus alerts and warnings about your computer being hacked, blocked, etc. may also appear in Read-this-hot-stuff.today ads. These are tech support scams. At best, they’re there to sell you a dubious antivirus program subscription. At worst, fake support people will convince you to give them access to your computer and buy hundreds of dollars worth of fake tech support.
This isn’t even taking into account all the other fraud subscription sites, various mature content that seems to be targeting children, and download sites for malware that will take over your browser.
How to stop Read-this-hot-stuff.today ads
Read-this-hot-stuff.today can send you unwanted notifications because your browser settings allow that. This could have happened either because you visited Read-this-hot-stuff.today and clicked “Allow” when it asked you to, or because malware on your computer set that setting in your browser.
Read-this-hot-stuff.today is mostly advertised on pirating sites, like ones where you can watch free streams. It’s also promoted by other notification spammers, like Special-offers.online, Creditcable.info, R.adport.io, Click-now-on.me, etc. These sites just make up a reason to ask you to allow their notifications – “to close this site”, “to watch this video”, “to download this file”, “to prove you’re not a robot”, and others. These are totally made-up reasons, but enough people get tricked for Read-this-hot-stuff.today and other viruses to make enough money from the advertisements.
Luckily, such abuse is being fought against. Firefox already blocks notification prompts, Chrome's next version will, too. Browsers update automatically unless you’ve asked them not to, so these improvements will come to your computer soon. Hopefully, this spells the end of sites like Read-this-hot-stuff.today.
To block notifications that you’ve already allowed, you need to go to your browser settings, find “Read-this-hot-stuff.today”, and choose “Block” in the menu next to it. This article on web push notifications has instructions for all the popular browsers. But in short, you can see the notifications page like this:
- Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
- Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
- Edge (new) – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address bar.
- Firefox – open the menu, choose Preferences, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, then see Notifications and press Settings next to it.
If you suspect that there’s malware on your computer (like you downloaded something that Read-this-hot-stuff.today offered you) or just want to be careful, scan your device with a trusted anti-malware program. It could be Combo Cleaner for Mac, SpyHunter for PC, or other good-quality software.
