Problems with RegServo

RegServo is a registry cleaner

RegServo is a Windows program that offers to “fix your PC errors easily”.

As its name implies, RegServo is a registry cleaner. The registry is a sort of database in Windows computers. It is used by Windows and by third-party programs to store various settings. You can do a lot of cool things by changing your Registry, you can customize your Windows experience in helpful ways (The 10 Best Registry Hacks for Windows 10).

In general, registry cleaners are considered to be junkware. Microsoft does not recommend them (Microsoft support policy for the use of registry cleaning utilities). As you can imagine, making the wrong change to the registry can really mess things up. This is why registry cleaners are viewed with suspicion – they promise to resolve errors, but they’re also likely to introduce some. No single program can know how other programs use your registry. If they make too many changes, they can break things.

Aware of the poor reputation of registry cleaning software, RegServo promises that it’s better than the other registry cleaners out there. But despite that, antivirus scanners flag RegServo’s installer as Adware, FileRepMetagen, PUP (potentially unwanted program), and Riskware. Here are the scan results: Virustotal.com.

RegServo's installer gets detected by antivirus scanners.

It scares users unnecessarily

Once RegServo is installed on a computer, it performs a scan and then displays scan results. It might detect hundreds of items and mark them as issues.

The problem here is that RegServo flags as “Issues” all sorts of harmless items: registry entries that might be unused but aren’t doing any harm. This can cause the users of RegServo to feel like, if they don’t “Fix Issues”, their computer might be in trouble. Some other programs that can be described as scareware include Simple Malware Protector, SpeedFixTool.

But unnecessary and unused registry entries are usually harmless. If you do experience Windows errors, you can troubleshoot and solve them with tools provided by Microsoft (Troubleshoot blue screen errors).

Besides, RegServo appears to be a very old program. It might cause problems accidentally, simply because it lacks knowledge of new features.

In addition, RegServo and programs like it often insist on running regularly, such as every time you turn on your PC. As a result, these programs can slow down your computer.

How to remove RegServo

You can uninstall RegServo like any other program – remove it from your Control Panel as described below, or use your Settings app to open Apps and features and click on RegServo to uninstall it.

But to make sure that all malware is gone, it might help to scan your computer with an antivirus program, such as Spyhunter. After all, if RegServo installs on a hidden folder, it might leave files behind.

It’s best to avoid using registry cleaners on your PC. If you think that it is needed, I would honestly recommend a PC reset (Reset your PC). This is a guaranteed way to give your computer a fresh start, although you will have to reinstall your programs and change your settings.
