The problem
Royal Ads appear a second or two after you searching for something on Google.com or another search engine. The results look like normal search results, except for the little “Royal” label. In some cases, there’s an ‘X’ there that you can click to get rid of the ads. But if you misclick, the links will open.
Royal Ads number five or so and they appear above your web search results. The ads look related to your search, but then they redirect to some totally unrelated sites: gambling ads, random online stores and coupons, and alternative search engine sites. That is to say, Royal Ads are worse than normal ads because you can’t even trust what the heading says.
It could help if you switched to another search engine, such as Duckduckgo, but that’s a bandaid fix. The real answer is to get rid of Royal Ads. To do that, you need to check your installed browser extensions. One of them is being naughty.
Where did Royal Ads come from?
Royal Ads are not normal search ads. They are not even labeled properly. They have nothing to do with Google. They get injected locally: first, your browser downloads the page, then Royal Ads are added by the malicious extension, and then your browser displays the page on your screen. The Royal Ads problem is pretty similar to the Hecktasit.club hijackers and random browser extensions, like Flight Tab Pro.
Browser extensions are small apps that change how a web browser functions. Each browser has its own method for installing them. For example, Chrome, new Edge, Opera, and other Chromium browsers use the Chrome Web Store to install extensions. And despite efforts to crack down on bad behavior, low-quality and deceptive extensions still get uploaded there.
How can you find the extension responsible for the Royal Ads injection? Here are a few notes:
- The malicious extension could be pretty much anything: adult site blockers, video converters and downloaders, dark theme extensions, task trackers, etc.
- They could also have been installed by you at any time and not just around when Royal Ads started appearing. Browser extensions do get updates and some do get converted into adware after reaching a certain amount of users.
- Royal Ads get injected into Google.com, so the extension likely has access to this page. Look for extensions with permission to either “Read and change your data on all sites you visit” or “Read and change your data on all Google.com sites”.
- Check even the trusted extensions, do not skip even a single one. Disable them and see if the problem disappears.
How to get rid of Royal Ads
First, remove or disable the bad extension. Or disable all of them, then enable them one-by-one and try searching for something on Google a few times. You’ll see which extension injects the ads.
It might be a good idea to scan your computer with an anti-malware program. Some malicious extensions get installed by malware which keeps reinstalled them if they’re ever removed. Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, and other scanners can help you find malicious apps.
Syncing could be another issue – the bad extension could be reinstalled while syncing is enabled. On Chrome, check that by typing “chrome://settings/syncsetup” in your address bar, clicking “Manage sync”, and turning off the switch for “Extensions”.
