S3arch.page redirects
Cause of the redirects
It is most likely a bad browser extension that’s causing redirects to S3arch.page.
Maybe an old browser extension of yours got infected with malicious code, was sold to malicious actors, etc. Or a new malicious add-on was installed on your browser, such as XMS APP, Botas APP, Zurim APP, Quisla APP, etc.
Browser extensions like these get installed in a few different ways:
- they’re advertised by low-quality sites, by adware, and by other browser hijackers,
- they get promoted by false mandatory extension prompts and by fake download links,
- they are bundled with other adware, embedded in the installers of free software as optional offers.
One browser extension that redirected its users to S3arch.page, XMS APP, had 30 thousand users at one point.
You might not even notice when the S3arch.page hijacker is installed. These extensions are quiet. However, checking them out in your extension area (in the upper right corner of your browser) does reveal them.
How S3arch.page appears in the browser
The S3arch.page redirects are quite obvious. You type in your search query and then your browser loads Searchred01.xyz, Searchmes.xyz, Websearches.club, or another site, and finally S3arch.page.
This happens to searches performed on Google or Bing (but not Yahoo or other, smaller search engines, like Ecosia).
If your default search engine (check it in Settings -> Search Engine) is Google or Bing, then S3arch.page hijacks the address bar, too.
The malicious browser extensions that brought S3arch.page can read and change your data on those two sites, which is why they’re able to redirect you to S3arch.page so easily.
No result filtering, no different result types (videos, images), and other features that should be standard for search engines – S3arch.page lacks basic features. And even though a link at the bottom of S3arch.page says “Search for [your query] on Google”, it doesn’t work because clicking it simply reloads S3arch.page.
Adware
The problems don’t end here. XMS APP and the other hijackers can read your browsing history. They log your search queries, the results you click on, and other information.
Often, S3arch.page adds a lot of ads to your search results. Like most malware nowadays, S3arch.page redirects are done for the sake of advertising. Malicious and dishonest actors use S3arch.page to make money from advertising while failing to provide useful features.
Some of the ads on S3arch.page promote Zapmeta, Izito, and other alternative search engines. I see them promoting browser hijackers, PC and Mac optimizers, and other junkware all the time. Be careful with the ads that S3arch.page shows because they can lead to more infections. Not to mention, these are ads that open search result pages that have even more ads. It is a huge waste of time.
How to remove S3arch.page redirects
You could change your default search engine or even use a different browser, but those are bandaid solutions. It’s best to get rid of S3arch.page redirects by removing the malware that’s causing them.
To stop the S3arch.page redirects, open your browser and look at all the browser extensions that are installed. Remove or disable all the suspicious ones.
If you’re not sure about your extensions – which ones are malicious and which ones are safe – you can try disabling all of them and then re-enabling them one-by-one while testing search. When S3arch.page redirects return, you’ll know which extension is responsible. Below are detailed instructions for how to remove browser extensions, manage your search engine and your new tab page.
Some browser hijackers can’t be removed normally because they abuse certain system settings. Depends on how they were installed. Read the post on how to deal with browser extensions that refuse to be removed – “Installed by enterprise policy” (fake). You can fix the issue manually.
It might be useful to scan your computer with an antivirus program (Spyhunter for PC, Combo Cleaner for Mac, others) to look for malicious items. Considering that S3arch.page advertisements can lead to junkware and that the hijackers that promote S3arch.page may arrive with other malware, it’s important to mind your computer’s security.
