Is SafeSoft PC Cleaner safe?

A potentially unwanted program

SafeSoft PC Cleaner is detected by a few antivirus scanners as a potentially unwanted program. That doesn’t mean that it is dangerous, but it’s a warning that something about the way it is distributed or the way it works.

The first thing that I noticed about SafeSoft PC Cleaner is that it has some negative reviews from back a few years ago. It was criticized for exaggerating findings like unnecessary registry keys and temporary files, making them seem like problems. This sort of behavior only serves to scare people unnecessarily, which is why SafeSoft PC Cleaner was considered a PUP.

Nowadays, SafeSoft PC Cleaner seems to not have this problem, ar at least not to the same degree. It’s even been certified by AppEsteem!

Despite that, SafeSoft PC Cleaner is still detected by scanners as a potentially unwanted program (PUP): Virustotal.com. Some of the detections might be because of SafeSoft PC Cleaner’s connection to previous PUPs.

SafeSoft PC Cleaner's program and installer both get detected by a few scanners.

Redundant features

Looking at SafeSoft PC Cleaner’s features, there is a lot here:

  • Finding and deleting browser items that may have an impact on your privacy and managing browser notifications.
  • Deleting logs, caches, and temporary files.
  • Cleaning the registry.
  • Boosting memory.
  • Uninstalling programs.
  • Changing the Windows 10 privacy settings.
  • Finding malware.

And there are more features.

However, most of the features that SafeSoft PC Cleaner offers are, well, already easily accessible and available for free.

Windows 10 automatically installs new device drivers, detects malware, allows you to manage your privacy settings, remove programs, manage startup items, etc. Web browsers also provide easily accessible settings to manage their data. Microsoft offers various free tools and settings to improve Windows performance – Support.microsoft.com.

Registry cleaning and memory boosting aren’t available on Windows – these things are generally not advised. These tricks can hurt a computer’s performance as much as they can help it.

So, it looks like SafeSoft PC Cleaner is a program that compiles various settings that are already available on your computer into one program. It’s up to you whether you find that valuable.

SafeSoft PC Cleaner offers a list of features.

SafeSoft PC Cleaner is one of many PC cleaners of questionable utility. There are many that use a variation of the name PC Cleaner.

How to remove SafeSoft PC Cleaner

Uninstall SafeSoft PC Cleaner

When SafeSoft PC Cleaner is being installed, it may open a website and ask you to allow its notifications. You can block notifications in your browser settings.

As for SafeSoft PC Cleaner, you can uninstall it from your Settings or your Control Panel.

You can also use an anti-malware tool like Spyhunter or Malwarebytes. The latter detects SafeSoft products for sure – it is more sensitive to potentially unwanted programs than many other scanners.

How it was installed

SafeSoft PC Cleaner can be downloaded from its website, Safesoftpro.net/Safesoftpro.com by Blacktail, as well as Fixmypc.help and Pcspeedup.net.

SafeSoft PC Cleaner has an affiliate agreement, which means that people and companies other than SafeSoft could promote SafeSoft PC Cleaner. Dishonest marketing by affiliates is one of the reasons why some programs get detected as PUPs and indeed, I’ve seen some potentially dishonest marketing for SafeSoft PC Cleaner.

Specifically, Fixmypc.help has a webpage that’s designed to look like an old version of a Support.microsoft.com webpage. This strategy is meant to take the trust that people have in Microsoft (the developer of Windows) and use it to promote SafeSoft PC Cleaner. It’s more than a little dishonest.

SafeSoft PC Cleaner promoted by a page that looks a lot like Support.misrosoft.com.

Outbyte PC Repair, Fast!, and many other apps do the same thing.

Besides, a few years ago, SafeSoft products (SafeSoft Protector) did use to come bundled with free Windows programs as optional offers. That would make it easy for users to install them by accident, which is problematic.

It’s good to scan your computer with an antivirus tool to make sure that you haven’t accidentally downloaded and installed any unexpected apps, programs, and browser add-ons.
