SafetyNut is a browser plugin that can be added to Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. It is installed together with suspicious Movies Toolbar, which is usually added when you are installing some freeware or shareware from the Internet. SafetyNut is related to numerous unwanted programs so you should be very careful if you detected it on your computer.
Usually PC users notice this application when they browse the Internet. They receive a popup warning that SafetyNut.exe has stopped working. If you have noticed such a notification, you should check if any of your browsers have Movies Toolbar added. If so, you have to remove it from all your browsers as soon as possible and that should eliminate SafetyNut too.
Movies Toolbar is not a reliable application either. As already mentioned the most common way for it to infiltrate is using bundling method. Moreover, it makes some changes in the affected browsers without asking for a user’s permission. It includes changing your homepage and default search provider. The goal of SafetyNut and Movies Toolbar is to advertise various commercial websites which these programs provide instead of your regular search results once they take over your browser.
Remove SafetyNut from your computer once you detect any signs of its presence. Uninstall it and Movies Toolbar from Control Panel and restore the settings of the affected browsers. If you cannot remove it from your system manually, run a full system scan with a reputable antispyware program, such as Spyhunter or malwarebytes. Don’t forget to upgrade your chosen tool to its latest version.
Using Control Panel to remove the main SafetyNut components and installers
- Go to Control Panel. On Windows XP/Vista/7 open Start -> Control Panel , Add/Remove Programs or Uninstall . On Windows 8 enter Control Panel in the search box, then look for Uninstall a program. You may need to confirm that you are the administrator on this PC, in both cases.
- Look for SafetyNut, Movies Toolbar and /or similar looking items on the list of programs. By default, I recommend removing Yontoo, WebCake, anything “savings” or “coupon” related. Scanning with Anti-Malware programs like Spyhunter or Stopzilla might give a good idea of what programs you should remove from there as well.
- Close Control Panel.
Removing SafetyNut from Internet Explorer
- Press on the Wench icon->Manage Add-ons.
- Go through Toolbars and extensions. Remove everything related to SafetyNut, Movies Toolbar and items you do not know that are made not by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Oracle or Adobe.
- Close the Options.
Removing SafetyNut from Firefox
- Enter about:addons in URL field.
- Go through Extensions and Addons list, remove everything SafetyNut and Movies Toolbar related as well as those items you do not recognise. If you do not know the extension and it is not made by Mozilla, Google, Microsoft, Oracle or Adobe probably you do not need it.
- Optionally, reset Firefox: go to Firefox ->Help (Help in menu for OSX users) -> Troubleshooting Information. Then Reset Firefox.
Removing SafetyNut from Chrome
- Enter chrome://extensions in url field.
- Go through extensions list and remove programs you do not need, especially similar to SafetyNut or Movies Toolbar. If unsure, you can disable them temporarily.
- Restart Chrome.
- Optionally, you can enter chrome://settings in URL bar, press Advanced settings, scroll to the bottom of the list and press Reset browser settings.
NOTE:
If you found an extension that can’t be removed from the browser, it has either to be removed from Control Panel or with antimalware programs (like Spyhunter, malwarebytes) or program uninstallers (like RevoUninstaller).
