Search-7.com – a potentially dangerous search engine
Browser hijacker
Search-7.com is a search engine – a website that searches the internet and lists search results. Search-7.com is “enhanced by Google” and the browser tab with Search-7.com search results is titled ” which doesn’t mean that it’s directly related to Google. Search-7.com is separate and under control of an entirely different company. Google allows people to create custom search engines for free, to customize the results, as well as to add advertisements. Unfortunately, there are a lot of actors who abuse this to create and monetize search engines.
Why be suspicious of Search-7.com? For one, because it looks a lot like Conduit and especially Qxsearch.com. Qxsearch is part of a family of malicious browser hijackers that use deceptive ads to infect people’s computers. Browser extensions that are responsible for these hijackings are Kalox APP, Power App, Kano APP, and similar ones.
In the case of Search-7.com, it’s Convlus App, AdPop Block, PopStop, and others.
Ads and redirects
Another suspicious thing is that Search-7.com got very popular very suddenly: according to an estimation by a web analytics site, it went from zero to almost four million visits in two months. But there’s no way that Search-7.com got popular on its own merits as it lacks any useful features. Not only does Search-7.com fail to offer unique search features, it doesn’t have basic stuff like language or date filtering. It doesn’t appear to be advertised anywhere, either.
What Search-7.com does have is a great number of advertisements. They appear above the real search results. Search engines make money off of ads, sure, but Search-7.com seems worse than normal. In my experience, it shows more ads and more dangerous ads (including adware links). Some links may also not lead to where they should. If you try going to Google.com, for example, you can. But trying to use it to search the internet just opens Search-7.com again.
How to stop Search-7.com redirects
Find and delete malware
When you search the internet for something, if it’s Search-7.com that returns the results, the culprit is probably a browser hijacker. In short, you need to:
- Find and remove all malware.
- Delete malicious browser extensions.
- Check network settings.
Browser hijackers are usually bad browser extensions. They get installed without your permission, without even your knowledge – or they turn evil after becoming popular enough. They hide themselves in the browser, not being too intrusive, but stealthily logging data, injecting ads, and redirecting searches.
The fastest way to get rid of the malware that’s behind the Search-7.com redirects is to use an anti-malware app. Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, and others. They can usually recognize malicious and potentially unwanted programs. But you might want to check your browser manually, too, in case the antivirus programs miss some things.
It shouldn’t be a problem. These guys who had Search-7.com redirect issues were able to fix them by finding and remove malicious extensions. An anti-malware scan is still advisable to find malware that may have come together with Search-7.com.
In detail about the malware behind Search-7.com
Some signs that a search-hijacking browser extension is installed on your browser:
- To the right of your browser’s address bar and to the left of the three-dot menu button, there should be all the icons of browser extensions that you have installed. If they’re not there, there should be an icon that looks like a puzzle piece. Click on it to see all extensions. You can bring up the context menu of the extension (right-click it or click the three-dot menu) and then choose the “Remove” option to uninstall it.
- Browser search engine settings may indicate which extension is behind the Search-7.com redirects. Open your browser, click on the three-dot menu, Settings, Settings again, Search Engine. If an extension controls this setting, it should be listed there.
The problem is, some malicious extensions, including Convlus App, aren’t displayed like that. And changing the search engine by choosing another one may not work. Search-7.com would still load, regardless of your settings. - Examining each extension’s details can help you find the culprit. When you open extension settings, press the Details button for each of them. You’ll see what permissions each extension has. Read and change your data on all the sites you visit? Read your browsing history?
However, malicious add-ons straight up do not allow you to check their details. They just load another page. If you can’t even see an extension’s details, you can be sure that it’s malicious.
If you can’t find which extension is responsible, disable every single one of the extensions that are installed. If one of them was behind the Search-7.com redirects, this should stop it. If the extension refuses to be deleted, read this article on the abuse of enterprise policy.
If disabling extensions and scanning your computer with antivirus programs doesn’t work, then try checking your Network settings:
- On macOS, go to System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> Proxies. If SOCKS is ticked and you didn’t do it, untick it and save.
- On Windows, go to Settings -> Network & Internet -> Proxy. Check if the settings are as you want them to be.
