How Search History works
It hijacks your browser
Search History is a browser extension by Vis Nova Media, an online monetization company. It offers to track your search history and display it on your new tab.
For this purpose, or with this justification, it also replaces your new tab page with its own. This allows Search History to offer its own search box – one that leads to an affiliate page that allows Search History to make a bit of money, probably. Most browser hijackers do this – promote an alternative search engine.
On top of that, Search History may also inject ads into your search results. These ads come from Searchhistory.xyz and they’re dependent on your search query and your personal ID. This is interesting because Search History mentioned nothing about this in its description on the Chrome web store.
It tracks your browsing data
Though the feature that Search History offers – tracking your search history – might seem useful, I don’t think that it is. Having your search history displayed on your home page is not very good for privacy, and neither is letting Search History track your data and send it to Searchhistory.xyz.
You can check your browsing history in your browser’s main menu. You can search your history, filter the entries by website, and remove individual entries, as well as filtered entries in bulk. In other words, your plain browser has more functionality than the Search History extension.
The lacking features are common for browser hijackers and for the Search History family which includes Shop Together, My Search Collector, Cheapy Peasy, and other extensions. It’s almost like the features are only there to trick the moderators of the Chrome Web Store and not for the sake of the users.
How the hijacker spreads
Search History can be found on Searchhistory.xyz. This site is advertised online and can appear in pop-up ads on MP3 converters, free movie sites, file download sites, and similar websites. The ads might make it look like Search History is required to be installed in order to download a file or watch a video. It’s really not, though.
If you visit a lot of pirating sites, it’s advisable to use an ad blocker and an anti-malware program to block malicious sites from being opened on your screen. Pop-up ads are used to promote hijackers like Search History, as well as more serious infections, such as web traffic hijackers like AuraSearch.
It’s also possible that Search History was included in the installer of another program. This is called bundling (Zdnet.com) and it allows malicious and potentially unwanted programs to be smuggled into computers without your knowledge.
You can avoid this by using an antivirus program and by only using reliable sites to download software from.
How to remove Search History hijacker
To stop Search History from opening unwanted sites or redirecting you to Searchhistory.xyz, just remove the Search History extension. You can do this manually by opening the extension area in the upper right corner of your browser or by opening the Extensions page in the Settings of your browser.
Search History won’t let you read its details – it redirects to another page immediately. Still, you can remove the extension.
Once Search History is removed, you should check the settings of your browser to make sure that your new tab and home page is set to what you want it to be. In addition, look at all of the extensions that you have installed. Remove those that are at all suspicious or that you don’t remember installing yourself.
It’s worth it to scan your computer with an anti-malware program, such as Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, or others. This is to check whether any malicious programs besides Search History were installed on your computer. The site Searchhistory.xyz is very similar to other browser hijacker sites, so there’s a concern that other adware viruses were installed.
In the future, be careful and avoid installing unknown browser extensions.
