How to remove Search101.info
Since Search101.info’s appearance is caused by a browser extension, you can get rid of it by removing that extension. The instructions for doing this can be found below.
To find which extension is causing Search101.info to appear on your screen, you can disable each of your add-ons one by one until Search101.info disappears.
Review your browser settings also and change them if needed. Set whatever new tab page and default search engine you wish to use.
It’s also a good idea to scan your computer with antivirus tools (Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, etc.) and check it for other potentially unwanted programs.
How Search101.info works
Search101.info is a website. It looks like a browser homepage – it has a search box, a few quick links to popular websites, and a big clock. The search box leads me to Yahoo (just like many other hijackers), but it might open other sites, too.
It seems like Search101.info spreads with various browser extensions, such as PDF Converter. This makes sense, as the extensions are made by the same company as Search101.info – an advertising company called Triplex.Media (not to be confused with the media creation company triPlex Media).
I think that PDF converters and other file converters should not take over your new tab. For document conversion, the extension pop-up should be enough. But then it could not offer you a search box, it wouldn’t have the option to redirect your search queries.
Search101.info is not necessarily bad. But it does look a lot like a browser hijacker. It’s why I got suspicious of it in the first place. On its About page, Search101.info is described as an advertising site, which is what a lot of newtab viruses and alternative search engines (Fastquicksearch.com, Info.com, others) are – advertising sites. Taking the form of search engines allows them to better target ads.
However, these sites usually fail to offer any useful features to their users. No additional functionality to make them worth using. Nothing to make up for the additional ads displayed in the search results.
How new tab replacers spread
Adware extensions are often advertised online. Other times, they’re embedded in the installers of other programs.
You might install an extension that seems useful and trustworthy without knowing that it directs your search queries to a potentially unwanted site. Such “features” are usually glossed over.
There’s something about Triplex.Media’s extensions – they have no reviews despite having tens of thousands of users. This is really common for those extensions that use dishonest messages to manipulate people into installing them in such a way that users don’t even realize what’s happening. Fake download buttons, other deceptive ads. But I can’t say if that’s going on with Search101.info or if there’s another reason for the lack of reviews.
Bundling with other programs is another way that potentially unwanted extensions spread. In such a case, you might not know that an add-on is being installed until after it’s been added to your browser.
It’s important to be careful about what extensions you install. You can look at a few aspects of an add-on to help you decide if it’s trustworthy:
- The style of reviews. Real reviews usually discuss the features of the extension and are they posted over a long period of time. Fake reviews tend to be short, lack details, and be posted over a short time of each other.
- The identity of the developer. Trustworthy developers should be honest about their business model.
- The privacy policy. Skim it, see what data is being collected and who it’s being shared with. Consider if you’re comfortable with that.
Luckily, even if a dubious extension does appear on your brower, it’s simple to remove.
