What is Searchesrope.com?
Searchesrope.com is a fake search engine
Searchesrope.com is a website that allows you to type in a search query to search the web. When I type in a search term into Searchesrope.com’s search box, it opens Bing.com with the search results for that query.
Besides the search box, there are also links called Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and Uninstall. The Uninstall link doesn’t refer to the Searchesrope.com website, but to the associated Searchesrope Default Search browser add-on.
This add-on was on the Chrome Web Store and amassed some 7,000 installations before it was removed. It’s not on the Chrome Web Store anymore. It did not have any useful features and it was nothing but a search hijacker – an extension that made money by forcing users to visit certain websites.
The extension would replace your default search with Searchesrope.com. Then, every time you searched the web from your address bar (omnibar), Searchesrope.com would catch it and redirect it to Bing or another site.
The description of the Searchesrope Default Search was very similar to that of MySocialShortcut, World of Notes, SMSFromBrowser, CouponXplorer, etc. – add-ons associated with Ask.com. But the Searchesrope.com website looks closer to Live-search.xyz and Media-search.xyz.
Is Searchesrope.com dangerous?
It may be installed without permission
Searchesrope.com has no useful features. But is it dangerous, or just useless?
It’s always bad when a website hijacks your search settings. And although I don’t know how exactly Searchesrope.com spread, extensions similar to Searchesrope Default Search tend to use two methods to infect computers:
- they come bundled with free programs, other extensions, and fake installers.
- they’re advertised online, often with deceptive ads.
It’s always a problem if a program or a plugin makes its way onto your personal computer without your knowledge or permission. Even if the program is safe and useful, it should not be installed without asking you. Yet, bundling tools like InstallCore are used and misused to sneak software on devices.
In theory, users could use Searchesrope.com voluntarily. But as this website and the associated extension lack any useful features, I doubt that anyone chooses to use them.
Searchesrope.com logs user data
According to Searchesrope.com’s privacy policy, it may collect data on how people use its website and it may share this data with third parties and use it for advertising. Most importantly, Searchesrope.com may log people’s browsing history and does not consider it to be personal information. Same with IP, device ID, cookies.
This is a little worse than normal tracking online. Most websites can track you and recognize you, but Searchesrope.com can see your browsing history and even your search queries. This data is very private, so it’s important to only let reliable, trustworthy sites see it. And I don’t think that Searchesrope.com is trustworthy.
How to stop Searchesrope.com redirects
Uninstall browser extensions that are unfamiliar, suspicious, unwanted, etc. The instructions for how to remove browser add-ons can be found below.
If that doesn’t work, disable all of your extensions temporarily and see if the Searchesrope.com redirects stop happening. If yes, then it must be one of your extensions that is responsible.
If the redirects keep happening, though, then there might be an adware infection on your computer. Review your programs and check your device with an antivirus tool, such as Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, and others.
Review the settings in your web browser: the ones for your default search engine and new tab. Make sure that Searchesrope.com is not listed there.
