What does Searchitdown.com do?
It redirects searches
Searchitdown.com is a browser-hijacking website. It’s by Perion and ClientConnect and it uses Conduit for its search engine, same as many other browser hijackers. It’s very similar to the infamous hijacker Trovi.
Once in your browser, Searchitdown.com replaces the new tab page in your browser. It exists to advertise in web search results and in pop-up ads. As a search engine, even if a fake one, Searchitdown.com gets access to the search queries of its users, which makes it easy to deliver targeted ads – a lucrative sort of ad.
It collects user information
Knowing that, it’s not surprising that Searchitdown.com may collect a lot of information about its users. According to its privacy policy, Searchitdown.com can collect this information:
- your IP, location, and other settings,
- your browsing history and what content ad which ads you see,
- how you interact with ads,
- your search history including timestamps.
Is Searchitdown.com dangerous?
If Searchitdown.com is on your browser, it’s probably unwanted. As a search engine, it lacks some important features, such as more result types and result filtering. There’s no reason to use Searchitdown.com over a better search engine, like Google or Duckduckgo.
Plus, most people dislike excessive ads that Searchitdown.com causes. It shows too many ads in the search results and it may show pop-up ads in the browser.
But that doesn’t make Searchitdown.com a virus. It’s more like a potentially unwanted program – unhelpful, but it won’t steal your money. The ads it shows might, though. Deceptive ads are where the danger comes from on a lot of dangerous sites, like Soap2day. You can’t download malicious software from them, but you are exposed to a lot of potentially unwanted ads that could result in malware infections.
So, it’s recommended to remove Searchitdown.com and instead use a search engine that is more likely to show safer ads.
How to remove Searchitdown.com
Uninstall all suspicious browser extensions and apps/programs on your computer.
Check if there’s malware on your device. Look at the programs that were installed lately. Use an antivirus tool to check – Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS. Remove potentially unwanted and malicious programs.
The instructions for removing browser extensions are at the bottom. There are also instructions for changing your new tab page and your default search engine. Check them out in your browser.
It’s good to look for viruses other than Searchitdown.com on your device. The reason for this is that it is very possible that Searchitdown.com was not installed alone – that it arrived in a bundle with other adware apps. Browser hijackers often spread in adware bundles or get installed by other malware. So, it’s good to check if you need to remove some more items from your computer.
Once Searchitdown.com is gone, check out ways to customize your new tab page or use a reputable extension to do that. Also, you can use ad blockers for when you are visiting suspicious websites to protect yourself.
