Security Point Extension Redirects - How to remove

By Giedrius Majauskas

Security Point Extension is a browser add-on that offers to block unsafe websites and keep you safe online. Unfortunately, this extension has a few problems. It redirects internet search to Yahoo.com and it can read data on every visited site, both things completely unnecessary for scanning URLs and looking for malicious addresses.

Does Security Point Extension help?

Security Point Extension is not perfect

Security Point Extension is a browser add-on. You can find it on the Chrome Web Store and Mysecuritypoint.com. It’s made by Blackrock Interactive, the same people who also made MultiFile Converter, RadioSimplified, and TopRecipeFinder.

The Security Point Extension add-on offers to protect you from phishing scams and other online dangers. It also replaces your default search engine with Yahoo.com for some reason. Browser add-ons do this way too much.

I tried a few websites that are flagged by some security programs as dangerous (for example, the Vpnupdate.net site that downloads fake Google Chrome updates) and a few notification hijackers. Unfortunately, Security Point Extension didn’t detect them as dangerous. It rated them “A+ Safe Website”. Occasionally the rating would go down from A+ to just A.

Strange – Security Point Extension does seem to check Virustotal.com scan results, but it didn’t block sites that are flagged by scanners on Virustotal.com.

It hijacks search settings

Security Point Extension pushes Yahoo.com as the default search engine. This is not helpful in any way. Yahoo is not more secure than Google or other search engines. Security Point Extension hijacking search settings is something a browser hijacker would.

For example, the Microsoft Defender Browser Protection extension also offers to block unsafe websites, and yet it doesn’t replace people’s search engines with Bing.com. It also doesn’t ask to read your data on all the sites you visit – it only reads your browsing history, which is far less intrusive than Security Point Extension getting access to all your data on every site.

Likely, Security Point Extension gets paid for promoting Yahoo. This helps it remain free of charge, but it doesn’t necessarily make users happy.

Alternatives to Security Point Extension

Security Point Extension might mean well, but malicious site blocking apps shouldn’t promise things they can’t deliver. It’s very difficult to detect unsafe web pages. New malicious sites spring up quickly and there are too many of them to keep track. Dangerous sites encrypt traffic and use reputable certificates to appear trustworthy.

So, how can you protect yourself online?

  • Google Chrome already blocks unsafe sites. It shows alerts for known phishing sites and other harmful sites.
  • Many malicious sites spread through pop-up ads, so ad blockers can block a lot of harmful content online.
  • It helps to be aware of common scams (fake giveaways, phishing scams, scareware, get-rich-quick schemes) and the tactics that scammers use to manipulate us.
  • Most importantly, you should be very protective of your personal information. Don’t reveal your name, passwords, payment to a site unless you’re sure it can be trusted.

How to remove Security Point Extension

There’s no harm in keeping Security Point Extension installed if you like it and don’t mind your search results being displayed by Yahoo.com.

But you can uninstall Security Point Extension manually as described in the instructions below. At the same time, check your other extensions and if any of them are unused or even unfamiliar to you, disable or uninstall them.

Extensions can access your browser settings and data, so only allow those add-ons that you trust.

You can also scan your device with an antivirus program (Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner for Mac, Spyhunter for PC, etc.). If there are other potentially unwanted apps on your device, antivirus scanners should warn you about them.
