How Shoptogether.xyz affects a web browser
Browser hijacker
When Shoptogether.xyz is installed, here are some of the results:
- Bing.com delivers your search results. This doesn’t always, but it’s common enough.
- Ads are injected into your web search results. New offers right at the top of your search results.
- New tabs open by themselves. Sometimes, they also close by themselves.
A web browser is a program used to display webpages and interact with them. The program you’re reading this post on is a web browser.
Extensions are little expansions to web browsers. They’re supposed to add new features or change how a browser works. They need to be installed to work.
Once installed, they have substantial access to your browser, including data about your activities. For this reason, it’s recommended to only install extensions made by trusted developers.
Shoptogether.xyz is a malicious browser extension that, rather than offering any useful features, forces your browser to display ads on your screen and to open promoted websites. It’s very similar to Cheapypeasy.xyz, Shopping Friend, and others.
New search engine
In some cases, Shoptogether.xyz makes the browser open Bing.com whenever you search the internet.
You must have a default search engine – Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. – set in your browser settings: Main menu -> Settings -> Search engine. This is the site that your browser opens when you type a query into your address bar.
Shoptogether.xyz watches when you search the web and forces your browser to open another site. For a lot of people, that was Bing.com.
I do not know why Shoptogether.xyz opens Bing.com, but it’s not uncommon for browser hijackers to promote a particular search engine. It’s usually Yahoo.com.
Unexpected pop-ups
Whenever you visit a new site, Shoptogether.xyz opens a window saying that it’s “searching deals and coupon codes” for the new site. It’s Check.qualitychecker.net.
Shoptogether.xyz can open new tabs whenever it wants. It can also close them. Browser tabs opening and closing randomly is a good indication that a malicious extension was installed.
Shoptogether.xyz uses this power to prevent users from looking at it. In your browser settings, there’s a section for extensions. Shoptogether.xyz (Shop Together) has an entry there. If you click on its Details button, which is supposed to give you a description of the extension’s features and permissions, it redirects to another site!
Ad injection
The main purpose of Shoptogether.xyz appears to be injecting ads into your webpages.
Webpages are basically text files. Your browser’s job is to draw them nicely, but if you right-click with your mouse and select “Inspect” from the context menu, you can see what sites look like under the surface.
Shoptogether.xyz watches for when you search the web for something marketable, then downloads relevant ads and includes them in the webpage with your search results.
If your Google, Bing, Yahoo, other search results suddenly started showing unusual ads or a lot more ads than normal, that’s probably not the websites; that’s another sign that a malicious extension was installed on your browser.
How to remove Shoptogether.xyz ads
Uninstall Shop Together and remove other unwanted browser add-ons. Check your recently-installed programs, too.

You can also remove Shop Together manually. Open the main menu of your browser by clicking the three dots in the upper left, go to Settings, Extensions, find Shop Together, and click the button Remove.
In some cases, Shoptogether.xyz might not be removable or it might return after being removed. If this happens to you, check our post on Enterprise policy abuses and how to deal with them. For Windows users, that may involve deleting certain entries from your Registry. It can be a little daunting, but as long as you’re careful, it’ll be fine.
