Supposed to help track packages, Smart Package Tracker is yet another adware browser extension. It changes your new tab page to Smartpackagetracker.com and redirects your search queries to Yahoo.com. And it gets installed with the help of adware. I’d advise everyone who has Smart Package Tracker installed to look for other malicious extensions in their browser – and to remove them as quickly as possible.

How Hijackers Get Installed
Smart Package Tracker can be installed from the Chrome Web Store, where all browser extensions for the Chrome browser live. But it also has a home page: Smartpackagetracker.com. You wouldn’t think it, though, because Smartpackagetracker.com looks like any package-tracking site. It’s not, though – it purely exists to promote the Smart Package Tracker extension. Here’s how the process goes:
- A person opens their browser and uses a search engine to look for a package-tracking site. For example, they type “fedex tracking” and press Search.
- This person gets a search results page and clicks on the first link that looks relevant.
- The newly opened page has a text box for a tracking number, so the person types it in.
- Instead of getting information on the package, the person is asked to install Smart Package Tracker.
- After installing Smart Package Tracker, there’s still no clear way of getting any package info, but the browser’s new tab page has now changed.
And that’s how Smart Package Tracker got over fifty thousand users.
Of course, it’s also possible for Smart Package Tracker to spread by being bundled with free programs or by showing normal ads on various websites.
However, search-engine advertising is the most common. Here’s the thing, though: people who see ads for Smart Package Tracker in their search results must have already had adware on their browser. Sites like Kensaq.com, Zapmeta.com, Info.com, Hidemysearches.com, Theweb.com, and others advertise browser hijackers all the time, and these sites are themselves forced by malicious extensions in your browser.
Smart Package Tracker also has a favorite search engine – Yahoo.com. When you search using the search box on Smart Package Tracker’s new tab page, Yahoo.com opens.
Problems With Smart Package Tracker
Smart Package Tracker is very similar to Map Directions Pro and Maps Now, all three seeming to be made by the same company – Webalytics Media. Smart Package Tracker may look professional and official, but it has nothing to do with FedEx, Ups, or any other shipping company. It’s just using their names so that more people go to Smartpackagetracker.com, that’s all.
Most of Smart Package Tracker’s reviews are left by people very angry at FedEx for supposedly bungling their shipment tracking system. People are livid that they can’t seem to find a way to track their packages and are being directed to install Smart Package Tracker.
After getting installed by tricking people, Smart Package Tracker then hijacks your browser’s new tab page. Every new tab that you open in your browser will open a site on Smartpackagetracker.com/homepage. The entirety of Smart Package Tracker’s useful features is a pop-up at the top that prompts you to type in the package tracking number. When something goes wrong, it tells you to install Smart Package Tracker again. So, some people can’t even use that.
Don’t forget – Smart Package Tracker’s privacy policy says it can log all of the search queries that you type in Smartpackagetracker.com, which is really bad for your privacy. So, at the end of the day, Smart Package Tracker is worse than useless.
How to Remove Smart Package Tracker
The quickest way to find all the malware and adware on your computer is to scan it with a security program. Anti-malware apps like Combo Cleaner for Macs, Spyhunter for PCs, Malwarebytes, and other reputable programs can do that.
You can also check your programs manually. Just open your browser settings as shown in the instructions in the next section. You’ll see all the browser extensions currently installed, including Smart Package Tracker. Remove all the ones that you don’t recognize. If you don’t use any of them, then remove all of them.
Frankly, browser extensions are bad for privacy, so you should only install the ones that you really, truly trust.
