How Solk.pro hijacks browsers
Solk.pro shows pop-up ads after tricking people to subscribe to them.
Various websites advertise Solk.pro:
- URL shorteners,
- file downloads sites,
- online file converters,
- free movie sites,
- other pirating websites.
They don’t just advertise Solk.pro with normal ads. Rather, they forcefully open a new tab in your browser with Solk.pro. Solk.pro then shows some misleading webpage, like a picture of a video, or an animation of a loading bar – something to fit the theme of whatever website you were on right before Solk.pro showed up. The goal is to deceive you and to make you think that this isn’t even an ad but a routine pop-up.
Solk.pro then asks you to allow it to send notifications. It doesn’t do it honestly, though. It may ask you to press the “Allow” button, but it lies about what that button does:
Press “Allow” to watch the video
This way, it tricks people to let it send notifications to their browsers.
The problems with unwanted ads
The notifications from Solk.pro appear as pop-ups on your screen. Whether it’s your phone, laptop, tablet, or desktop, Solk.pro can send the pop-up ads. They are distracting and they take up space on your screen. Excessive ads hurt productivity like nothing else.
Some of the ads that Solk.pro shows are pretty mundane: ads for online stores, browser games, and gambling sites. You can encounter these types of ads even on reputable websites.
But Solk.pro also promotes adware, browser hijackers, scareware. It might even show fake virus warnings that serve as advertisements for fake antivirus programs and tech support scams. Subscription scams also find their audience through sites like Solk.pro. People who use browsers that are missing the latest updates risk getting their computer infected thanks to malicious ads.
Dangerous advertisements get banned by normal ad-networks and rejected by reputable websites reject to avoid hurting their audience. Nobody wants their site or ad-network to be known for spreading ransomware, do they? Solk.pro and sites like it (Fres-news.com, Anymorenews.com, etc.) don’t need to worry about their reputation. They tend to be short-lived and they rely on tricks and deception to get more users. So, promoters of harmful and dangerous content flock to sites like Solk.pro to advertise.
To those whose browsers are being harassed by Solk.pro risk being exposed to some dangerous sites and getting their computers infected with malware.
How to stop Solk.pro ads
There are multiple versions of Solk.pro, such as 1l4pr.solk.pro and other [random].solk.pro. Besides Solk.pro, other sites might be sending ads to your browser, too. They can all be stopped by using the same browser settings:
- Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
- Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
- New Edge – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
- Firefox – open Settings, Preferences, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
Once you open the page with notification settings, you will see all the sites that you have either allowed to send notifications or blocked. With how easy these things are to do by accident, don’t be surprised if you find some addresses that you don’t recognize in either of the lists.
Next to each address, you can click a button to open a menu and choose to block or remove the address (the addresses whose ads you’ve already blocked will prompt you to allow or remove them instead). Block Solk.pro and other unwanted addresses. Removing will just reset things, which will enable Solk.pro to ask for your permission again. It’s better to block.
Next, search your computer for other adware. Solk.pro and sites like it promote adware, fake antivirus programs, malware, scams, etc. It is important to make sure that no nasty infections made it onto your computer. One way is to scan your device with an anti-malware app, such as Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, or another. Another is to just carefully review all the programs and browser add-ons that were installed around the time that Solk.pro’s ads appeared.
