Speedomizer Search Hijacker - How to remove

By Giedrius Majauskas

Speedomizer is a search hijacker that changes your browser settings to inject ads into your web search results. Speedomizer’s causes you to see more ads in search results and, in exchange, gives you access to a very basic internet speed meter. Worse, Speedomizer is advertised using really deceptive tactics like “Recommended Extension” and “App Required” to trick people into installing it without knowing what it is. Thousands of users have installed Speedomizer to their browsers and had their search hijacked and replaced with Yahoo.com.

How to get rid of Speedomizer

If you installed Speedomizer by following webpages and screens that told you to install it because, supposedly, it’s needed to download a file or watch a video, don’t doubt that those screens were lying. Speedomizer is just another Webcoapps adware, a deceptive browser extension that takes advantage of people who don’t know what browser extensions are and how they work.

Speedomizer can be removed by going to browser Settings, clicking on Extensions, finding Speedomizer in the extensions screen, and choosing to Remove it. More detailed instructions are in the last section of this post. You can also choose to remove it with an antivirus program, like Combo Cleaner for Mac, SpyHunter for PC, and others. Antivirus programs with real-time web protection can also block malicious sites and help you avoid search hijackers in the future.

Install.speedomizer.com tries to get visitors to subscribe to its notifications so that it can show them pop-up ads all the time. To block these notifications, check out this article. You just need to go to the notifications settings by typing “chrome://settings/content/notifications” or “edge://settings/content/notifications” in your address bar and then find Install.speedomizer.com. Open the menu to its right and choose “Block”.

Speedomizer uses deceptive ads to convince people to install it.

How Speedomizer gets installed

Speedomizer is advertised on online streaming sites (illegal ones) and by file download sites. Adcash, AdsTerra, and other infamous ad-networks work to promote Speedomizer and many similar search hijackers, including ConvertMyVid, PDF Converter HD, and PDFPros.

These ads use the “Recommended Extension” and “App Required” templates, which are designed to fool people into thinking that they must install a browser extension to access online content. These ads work because they pop up when trying to view videos and download files. It’s not unheard of for sites to require certain tools to play videos and download stuff, so the ads look convincing. Nevertheless, they’re completely false and Speedomizer is just a random adware program.

Besides frequenting illegal websites to encounter these malicious ads, it’s possible that your computer was already infected with adware and it was an adware virus that forced these malicious ads to appear in your browser. If your computer is being plagued by excessive pop-up ads, it’s recommended to scan your device with an anti-malware tool to check for adware.

Issues with search hijackers

Speedomizer is pretty annoying: it forces your browser to go to Yahoo.com every time you search the web using your address box, and the only way to change that is either to uninstall Speedomizer or install another search-replacing browser extension on top.

Meanwhile, Speedomizer is reading your browsing history and your search queries. This data is then used to help advertisers target you with more relevant ads. Meaning that Speedomizer is not great for privacy, certainly no better than any other commercial search engine – except that it fails to provide any useful features.

Speedomizer’s main feature, officially, is changing your search engine. It says as much in the Chrome Web Store description (the Web Store is where Chrome browser extensions are installed from). Internet speed checker is supposed to be the real function, but it’s just the front. Chrome Web Store demands that Chrome extensions are single-purpose, so Speedomizer may have been banned if it hadn’t changed its description to explain that it’s actually a search hijacker and not an internet speed checker.

It works because people who are tricked by the deceptive ads don’t read the description anyway – they just want to get past Speedomizer to get back to their browsing.
