What is Sports Search for Chrome™

Sports search extension

Sports Search for Chrome™ is a free Chrome browser extension that promises to help users search for info about their favorite sports teams. It does this by recognizing sports terms in your search queries and suggesting relevant terms for you to search for.

But, in my experience, Sports Search for Chrome™ does very little. It doesn’t add features on top of what search engines already do and, if anything, it limits your search engine choices.

When Sports Search for Chrome™ is installed, it changes your default search engine to My-sports-search.com, which opens Yahoo.com. When you type in a search query to your address bar, Sports Search for Chrome™ recognizes some terms and makes suggestions (usually to add the word “scores” to the query). When you choose Sports Search for Chrome™’s suggestion, it loads search results by Yahoo.

Sports Search for Chrome™ asks to change your search settings.

Search engine replacer

Sports Search for Chrome™ is very honest about how it makes money (by redirecting its users to Yahoo), which is great. There are too many browser extensions that make money the same way but are dishonest with their users.

But what does Sports Search for Chrome™ really do in exchange for that money?

  • It reads your search queries and looks for sports terms.
  • It adds “scores” as a suggestion for completing search queries.
  • If you choose an entry completed by Sports Search for Chrome™, then it has Yahoo display the search results.
  • Yahoo displays quick info on many sports teams, including the results of the latest matches.

But, Yahoo does that with or without the “scores” bit. And so does Google and Bing, other two big search engines. You could perform the same search without Sports Search for Chrome™ installed and you would get the same result.

It seems like the only use for Sports Search for Chrome™ is redirecting to Yahoo when you search for sports teams. That would make sense if you used Ecosia or DuckDuckGo, smaller engines that don’t display quick team info. But when Sports Search for Chrome™ is installed, it doesn’t allow for those search engines to be used. It only allows Google, Bing, or Yahoo. And for sports terms, only Yahoo.

It just doesn’t make sense to use Sports Search for Chrome™. It doesn’t add anything, it takes choices away and then shows more ads.

Sports Search for Chrome™ results show more ads.

Reminds me of Web Protection for Chrome™, that was another browser extension that offered features that were already present in search engines.

The good news is that Sports Search for Chrome™ is not malicious, even though it’s not useful at all. It’s advisable to uninstall it, as each new browser extension, even if not malicious, is still a privacy and security risk. Though, if you like Sports Search for Chrome™, don’t worry, you can keep using it and feel safe. Probably.

Click the extension button, then the three-dot menu next to Sports Search for Chrome™, then Remove. Or find extension sin the settings of your browser as described in the instructions below.

Sports Search for Chrome™ can be uninstalled very easily.

You can also scan your computer with an anti-malware program, such as Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, or another scanner that you trust and that can detect potentially unwanted programs. Even though Sports Search for Chrome™ is a very mild threat, it still behaves like a browser hijacker. So, there might be a reason to check your computer for adware and for other hijackers, especially if you didn’t install Sports Search for Chrome™ intentionally.
