What is Srchpx.xyz
A browser is a program that we use to access the internet, like to read this post. Each browser has settings for the default new tab and the default search engine. Whenever you use the browser’s address bar (the long text box at the top of the window) to search for something, the default search engine is used. If Srchpx.xyz suddenly appears when searching the internet, it must have been set as your default search engine.
Srchpx.xyz redirects are caused by a malicious browser extension similar to Power App or Power App+. These malicious extensions do nothing but hijack your search engine. The add-ons behind Srchpx.xyz use transparent icons – so you may not even know that you installed something.
Symptoms of a Srchpx.xyz infection include your browser going to Srchpx.xyz every time you use the address bar to search for anything online. The first few results are always ads styled to look like Google ads (based on an older design). Sometimes the ads take a second to appear.
Some of the ads on Srchpx.xyz are perfectly safe, but some are not. Malicious promoted links include:
- Links to other browser extensions, as these always turn out to be other browser hijackers (such as App Discovery Tools).
- Links to binary trading scams and other get-rich-quick schemes.
- Fake news articles that use made-up stories and stolen pictures to promote suspicious medical supplements and weird cryptocurrency investment schemes.
- PC and Mac optimizers, driver updaters, and other snake oil.
Srchpx.xyz looks kind of like a custom Conduit search engine, but its search results are Google Custom Search: Srchpx.xyz uses Google’s technology but chooses which sites to search and what ads to show. It’s very similar to Xscx.xyz, Nvux.xyz, etc. Ultimately, these sites are connected to Qxsearch.com, which you can find out by reading their privacy policies.
How Srchpx.xyz spreads
Srchpx.xyz is advertised on Flash SD App Required and similar pages. These pages tell you that you have to install a certain browser extension to watch a video, download a file, or visit a certain website. They are lying to spread malware. Whenever a website tells you to download a Flash update, a browser update, or anything similar, ignore it: it’s malware.
Srchpx.xyz hijacker ads usually can’t be found on normal mainstream sites. That’s because those sites and their partner advertising companies have standards and the resources to weed out most malicious ads. More likely, you got infected with Srchpx.xyz while you were watching “free” streams, converting videos, looing for activators to unlock expensive software for free, etc.
Ads on these and similar sites often promote scams and malware, including browser hijackers like Srchpx.xyz. That’s because the advertising companies that these sites work with are either unwilling or unable to ban malicious advertisers. Malicious advertisers do use clever coding tricks to infiltrate legitimate sites, too, but putlocker-like sites and file download sites show malicious pop-ups much more regularly.
It’s possible that Srchpx.xyz was installed by a malicious program that was already on your computer, but more likely, the culprit was a malicious ad.
How to stop Srchpx.xyz redirects
To get rid of the Srchpx.xyz redirects by removing all malicious browser extensions from your browser. You can find malicious apps with an anti-malware scanner (like Combo Cleaner for Mac, Spyhunter for PC, etc.). Or you can find them manually.
If your malware isn’t called Power App, SD App, Flash App, Tail App, Tail Search, Toptosearch, or something similar, just check the permissions and description of each of the extension till you find the one that changes your search settings. Then remove it.
