What is Srchus.xyz?

You might have noticed your browser behaving strangely, with Srchus.xyz appearing in your web browser. You’d be right to be concerned.

We use web browsers to browse the internet, these are extremely important programs. Browser extensions are add-ons to browsers that change their functionality or add to it. Extensions can be developed by companies, individuals, and just about anyone. Unfortunately, some browser extensions are malicious, including the ones related to Srchus.xyz.

The Srchus.xyz address appears briefly in the address box of an infected web browser, before internet search results are loaded in Google.com or another site, like Vitosc.xyz. Srchus.xyz might also show the search results itself.

You might not notice anything wrong, at first – internet search results look more-or-less normal. But there is something suspicious going on. Browser hijackers, like Nittok, Smash App, or Power App, stealthily change browser search settings to Zingload.com, Srchus.xyz, Searchdimension.com, and other addresses. Your search queries and results go through these sites now. Which opens them to be spied on and manipulated by internet fraudsters.

The people behind Srchus.xyz want to make money by spying on people’s browsing habits (valuable data for advertisers) and by publishing ads and pocketing the revenue. Srchus.xyz is a bad internet search engine that didn’t cost anything for its owners to develop. To a victim, this is not much different than getting spam ad emails or pop-ups from a notification spammer.

Srchus.xyz spreads using deceptive ads.

While Srchus.xyz is interfering with your internet search, a few things may happen:

  • Ads are injected to above your internet search results. These ads lead to Kensaq.com, Zapmeta.com, and other search sites. These ads come from Srchus.xyz and not from Google.
  • Alternatively, your search results are replaced with Srchus.xyz or another site.
  • Your IP, browser, operating system, and the sites you visited before clicking on an ad are recorded in logs and used for analytics and advertisement.
  • Srchus.xyz can choose ads to show you based on your browsing habits and your interests.

Browser hijackers

Open your browser settings by pressing the button on the upper right corner of your web browser. Chrome and Edge users should then press on Settings in the drop-down menu and then scroll down to the Search Engine settings. Firefox users should click Preferences and then Search. There, you will see if and which browser extension is controlling your internet search settings.

Browser extension hijacks search engine settings.

Knowing to look for the extension can be tricky. Adware hijackers behind Srchus.xyz, like Nittok, are made to be stealthy. Their goal is to remain undetected, so that they can leech off of your browsing for as long as possible without you realizing they’re even there. To help stay hidden, Nittok doesn’t show an extension icon when it’s installed, so it looks like empty space. And trying to check Nittok’s details in browser settings immediately redirects to Google.com, so you can’t even check what kind of extension it is.

You can only go to extension settings and see the short description:

This extension configures your Default Search to Smash Search (srchus.xyz).

Browser hijackers don’t get installed on their own. These use the Flash SD App Required ads, which are fake warnings telling you that you must install a certain browser extension to continue using some website. Lots of malicious extensions use this trick to force people to install them. These ads appear on free movie streaming sites and similar ad-filled websites.

How to remove Srchus.xyz

Removing Srchus.xyz is as simple as removing the browser extension that caused them:

  • Check your search settings in your browser to check which add-on is in control over your default search setting.
  • Go to the extension settings page and remove the offending extension.
  • Check your other extensions and disable or remove the suspicious ones.

Also, it might be good to scan your computer with an anti-malware tool (Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, Malwarebytes, or another trusted program). This will just tell you if there’s adware or malware on your device that you need to take care of. Some anti-malware programs can also remove bad browser extensions and block malicious websites for you, helping you stay secure.
