Stream+ is advertised like it will help you stream free movies and TV shows by just installing it. If you read the fine print, Stream+ is supposed to show ads on Google.com as a way to finance whatever streaming site you use, like Olpair.com, Putlocker, or Fmovies.to. But this doesn’t even mean that using Stream+ will improve your streaming experience. Many adware viruses simply lie to you by telling you that you need to install them. Those pages are just ads and they can say whatever they want.
Stream+ gets one power – to inject whatever content it wants into Google.com pages when you visit them. It has this permission on Google Chrome:
Read and change your data on www.google.com
Stream+ does this to show sponsored content in web search results and make money that way. It can make more ads appear, it can show pop-up windows, and it can even replace links. This means that those who use Google.com while having Stream+ installed will have a hard time finding information because they have to deal with pop-ups, redirects, and irrelevant sponsored content.
Stream+ is a very minimalist browser hijacker. Most hijackers change your new tab page, your search engine, and collect information on your browsing habits. Sites like Startfenster.de force you to use their custom search engine where they put their ads. Stream+, on the other hand, simply advertises whatever products it was paid to advertise. Search engine ads can be simple, just a link to a website is enough. And some of those links are probably really dangerous.
Anybody could use Stream+ to advertise. Maybe the adware extension uses third-party ad-networks, such as Propeller Ads or Adcash, that have been seen spreading malicious content. Or maybe Stream+’s advertisers made deals with the extension, in which case, there is probably no control over the safety and quality of the ads. The people behind Stream+ probably don’t have enough resources to always control the ads. Malware makers could use Stream+ to distribute their ransomware, miners, adware, or password stealers. What’s to stop them?
How to avoid malware by Stream+?
Hijackers like Stream+ don’t only advertise malware, but they’re among the few that will work with malicious actors. Although malicious ads can show up anywhere, even on safe websites, they’re overrepresented on ad-networks and publishers that are associated with pirating, adult sites, and other websites that mainstream advertisers don’t want to work with. Stream+, as an adware virus, probably can’t get a lot of safe advertisers, so it’ll work with whoever is left:
- Distributors of rogue anti-malware who use fake security alerts to scare users into buying their product.
- Investment scam promoters using fake news stories.
- “Hot singles in your area” ads and other sites that try to get your credit card info.
- Fake giveaways and surveys that ask you to pay for the delivery of the nonexistent prize.
Don’t forget that exposing your payment data or your personal information to scammers could have real-life consequences, like making you a victim of identity theft. If you think that you fell for a scam, consider reporting it to your law enforcement, and make sure to keep the receipts (save screenshots of the scam).
Needless to say, Stream+ turns your Google.com search results into a minefield. You might resort to using Bing.com or DuckDuckGo.com to search the web to avoid Stream+’s ads. And if you weren’t using Google.com in the first place, Stream+ probably did not affect you at all. Either way, it needs to be removed from your browser.
How to remove Stream+
You can uninstall Stream+ and delete all the malware on your computer. With them gone, your search results will be normal once again. You can remove Stream+ manually, for which the instructions are below. If there’s malware on your computer, especially if Stream+ gets reinstalled on its own, scan your computer with a security program. Combo Cleaner for MacOS or SpyHunter for Windows could do it, as well as any competent anti-malware program.
Be careful about what browser extensions you install; they can be very dangerous, some of them can read your passwords and open malicious sites, so check their permissions and decide if you trust them. Avoid malicious websites by using an anti-malware program or an ad-blocker to block them. This won’t block 100% of all bad sites, but it will definitely make you safer.
