How to remove Streamsmob.com
Streamsmob.com is a website. It’s tied closely to the StreamsMob browser extension. While it’s possible to have Streamsmob.com take over your browser without the extension, it’s unlikely. To get rid of Streamsmob.com, you need to remove StreamsMob.
In addition, Streamsmob.com sometimes leads to other malicious sites, like Install.notify-service.com, Stream All, and others. This makes it important to check your extensions and apps/programs for unwanted additions.
You can use antivirus programs, such as Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, and others. They can point out suspicious items in your apps and add-ons. However, you may need to block notifications manually.
Remove bad browser add-ons
You can find your extensions in the upper right corner of your browser. In Google Chrome, that’s the little puzzle button.
You can find more detailed descriptions in the extension settings (Settings -> Extensions). Also, check your Search engine and new tab settings to see if an extension is controlling them. More detailed instructions (with screenshots) can be found at the bottom.
Remove StreamsMob right away. Review your other add-ons. Use an antivirus tool, if you aren’t sure. Disable or remove those that you don’t use and those that are unfamiliar to you. Extensions are pretty powerful, especially in how they can invade your privacy, so it’s best to be careful with what you let on your browser.
Block notifications
There’s a good chance that Streamsmob.com offered you to subscribe to its notifications. As did the sites that it promotes.
If you clicked that Allow button (it’s very easy to do without even meaning to), then you may be getting pop-up ads from Streamsmob.com and those other sites.
Here’s how to block them:
- Open Site content settings, the notifications section.
- Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
- Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
- Edge (Chromium) – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
- Firefox – open Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
- Find Streamsmob.com and other unwanted sites.
- If they’re in the Allowed list, block their notifications by selecting Block from the drop-down to the right of the site’s name.
Consider disabling notifications completely.
What is Streamsmob.com
Streamsmob.com is just a website that accepts search queries and sends them off to Yahoo.com or any other site. When StreamsMob is installed on a browser, it sets Feed.streamsmob.com as the default search engine. This way, whenever the user searches the web, Streamsmob.com gets to decide how they do it and where the results come from.
In addition, StreamsMob can read the user’s browsing history while Streamsmob.com can read their search history.
I don’t know exactly how the people who operate Streamsmob.com make money, but they could do it by:
- Using affiliate links when redirecting searches to Yahoo.
- Having Streamsmob.com redirect to other promoted sites.
- Having StreamsMob open promoted sites.
- Selling data collected about users.
It’s not that bad, as I’ve only seen Streamsmob.com do the first thing, and the privacy policy is a little vague. Too many extensions, even those that promise to help your privacy, end up selling your data. It’s something to keep in mind.
How StreamsMob gets installed
Most likely, you didn’t install StreamsMob for its amazing features. It doesn’t really have any. It just changes the default search engine.
You might have encountered a suspicious ad, such as this one:
Some ads that promote browser hijackers are basically fake download buttons. Some try to pressure you into installing them by projecting confidence and pretending to not be an ad, but a legitimate warning or required software.
People who don’t regularly use browser extensions are most vulnerable because they might be unfamiliar with how normal installation looks – and they won’t recognize when something isn’t right. And Streamsmob.com abuses it.
That’s all good for StreamsMob. It benefits from staying hidden even after it’s installed. The same goes for its cousins, like Gaming-search.com, PDF-Searchz.com, and many others. Who knows how many browsers are infected when you add all these hijackers together.
