Problems caused by SuperPDFSearch
SuperPDFSearch is a browser extension. Despite its name, it has nothing to do with PDFs. It’s a search replacer.
When SuperPDFSearch is installed, it changes one setting in your browser: the default search engine. Feed.superpdfsearch.com redirects to Landdays.xyz, Mybrowser-search.com, and other unexpected sites. It evens lands on Google.com, sometimes.
Why does it do this? SuperPDFSearch’s goal seems to be advertising and making money from advertising. While it’s installed, it can force your browser to open affiliate links. The people behind SuperPDFSearch can earn a commission.
In addition to opening ad-filled sites, SuperPDFSearch tracks user data:
- Browsing history.
- Search logs.
- Technical data on your device.
- Your location, language, etc.
And Superpdfsearch.com lists all this data, including your search logs, as non-personal information! This means that SuperPDFSearch might share it with third parties for various business purposes. It could also combine it with other data.
And this is a problem with lots of browser extensions, not just SuperPDFSearch (Browser extensions collect and sell data with almost no oversight). SuperPDFSearch is just worse because it utterly lacks any useful features.
How browser hijackers spread
Most likely, you didn’t install SuperPDFSearch intentionally. In most cases that I’ve seen, extensions like it (BestSearchConverter, CoolStreamSearch, etc.) are advertised online by misleadingly designed ads. These ads usually don’t even look like ads, but like prompts and installation processes:
- “Download Ready” ads that look like download links and buttons. Problematic when these pop-up ads show on file download sites.
- “Recommended Extension” ads that try to make people think that they must install the promoted extension.
- Other ads that use the “Continue” call to action to make themselves blend in with whatever you were doing.
This is why you can find people in the reviews of various browser hijackers saying “I had to install this” and “a site told me to install this”. They saw the misleading ads and mistook them for real warnings.
It’s also possible that unwanted extensions spread with infected installers. Free programs from shady websites, pirated software, fake updates that turn out to be adware bundles – they can also spread malware. Review your programs and apps installed at or around the time that SuperPDFSearch started messing with your browser.
How to remove SuperPDFSearch redirects
Delete malware and adware
To get back control over your browser – over your default search engine and other settings – you need to remove or disable all malicious browser add-ons. SuperPDFSearch, as well as other extensions that might have been installed in a similar way.
Below are the instructions for removing add-ons and then checking your browser settings.
You can check your add-ons and other programs with antivirus apps, like Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, and others. They can help you find items that are potentially unwanted, even if they’re not outright malware.
Check your settings
Once you remove SuperPDFSearch and other malware, you should review your browser settings. Once hijackers are gone, they can’t control your settings anymore. Those settings are up for you to manage.
For instance, Feed.superpdfsearch.com should no longer be your default search engine. And it should no longer send you ads through notifications.
In fact, Superpdfsearch.com might send you ads even if you never installed the extension that the site promotes. Luckily, you can stop these ads by going to your settings:
- Chrome – open Settings, scroll down to Site settings (under Privacy and security), click on Notifications.
- Edge (Chromium) – open Settings, click Site Permissions, Notifications.
- Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
- Firefox – open Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
