TelevisionAce (or Television Ace) is a browser extension released in order to make TV easier to watch online, or so its description claims. In reality, it’s a browser hijacker that tries to control how you search the web and to monetize that. TelevisionAce is a type of mild adware that causes you to see more ads than normal and spies on your browsing habits to make the ads more effective. On top of that, this hijacker probably got installed without you wanting it.

How to remove TelevisionAce
TelevisionAce hijacks your browser and potentially pulls down the security of your system. It’s not without reason that so many anti-malware programs detect TelevisionAce as unsafe.
Scan your computer with an anti-malware program, like Combo Cleaner for MacOS, SpyHunter for Windows, or another competent tool. This is not necessary, but hijackers like TelevisionAce do travel the same paths that more serious malware does, and it is associated with adware, so it’s important to make sure that your computer isn’t infected with any more malicious programs. If some malware remains, it could continue harming your computer.
TelevisionAce and the other browser hijackers can, in most cases, be removed like normal extensions. For example, in Chrome, you can right-click the extension’s icon and choose to remove it from the drop-down menu. Although the more shady extensions, like MSrch, don’t display extension icons.
After uninstalling TelevisionAce and the other unwanted add-ons, just check your settings to make sure that your favorite search engine is once again the default one and that everything is fine with privacy and security settings. Also, review the sites that can send you notifications and block all the suspicious ones.
Distribution and installation of TelevisionAce
TelevisionAce gets installed without really getting your consent, and sometimes even without your knowledge.
One of the ways that ahs been distributed is through bundling – unwanted applications like TelevisionAce being attached to regular free programs and installed in the background. For legal reasons, the installer does usually include some kind of warning about TelevisionAce, but it’s often deliberately made to be hard to notice, so people just end up missing it. TelevisionAce gets installed by default and effectively without a warning, so people can’t easily trace why and how it appeared in their browser.
TelevisionAce does get installed by people who search the web for a way to watch TV online for free and it’s also advertised a bit. Though it’s arguable if those ads are honest. They imply that TelevisionAce gives you a way to watch TV online, but al it actually does is give you a bunch of links to popular streaming services. You can’t actually watch online TV through TelevisionAce, you need to go to unrelated websites. Which makes the existence of this extension seem completely unnecessary.
You might be railroaded to install TelevisionAce after installing another browser extension, such as DownSpeedTest, MergeDocsOnline, or Ask.
How hijacking impacts your browsing
The security of your web browser is pretty important. After all, this program can remember your passwords if you allow it to and it remembers your browsing history, including every URL sent. Some browser extensions, like TelevisionAce, can see your history and can see exactly what phrases you search for using TelevisionAce’s search bar. This means that, as long as TelevisionAce is not disabled or removed, your browsing and search habits are being used by advertisers to decide which ads to show you – which are the most likely to work on you. If you care about your online privacy, be very careful about which browser extensions you install. It’s hard to control what they do with your information.
The ads that TelevisionAce collects your information for are displayed online, usually in the MyWay.com search results. MyWay is a functional web search engine, though it’s not popular or well-liked. It is also owned by the same company that developed TelevisionAce – Mindspark. Guess who makes money from the ads you see in MyWay.
TelevisionAce is a new tab extension – and plenty of new tab extensions favor one search engine, you could say. But the legitimate ones let you choose which engine to use. TelevisionAce does not. Also unlike good new tab extensions, TelevisionAce lacks customization completely. You can’t change what links are on there, despite the fact that Mindspark has made customizable new tab extensions in the past, so I know they can do it. When it comes to TelevisionAce:
- Its useful functionality amounts to giving you a list of links to sites like Amazon Prime, Fox, and Facebook.
- TelevisionAce doesn’t improve your new tab page and only takes customizability away from you. It could be made much less intrusive, but it’s not.
- The whole reason why TelevisionAce takes over your homepage is to get you to use the MyWay search engine and to look at the ads displayed there.
- And all this – after the hijacker was probably installed without your informed consent.
