Template Search - How to remove

Template Search is a potentially unwanted browser extension and possibly a browser hijacker. For template searching, it’s not much more useful than a set of bookmarks. And even though Template Search does deliver the features that it promises, there’s no reason for it to take over your new tab page and to restrict your options for customization.

Problems with Template Search

It’s a template search helper

Template Search is a browser add-on. It promises to help you find various printable templates – patterns and layouts that you can use to create custom documents.

Template Search does deliver, in a way. It allows you to search for keywords to find your templates. It then displays relevant results from a bunch template sites. But there are some problems with how this extension works.

When Template Search is installed, it replaces your new tab and then adds a widget in the bottom right that lets you search for templates on its own website, Templatesearch-serp.org. It lists templates from Canva.com, Jotform.com, Office.com, Template.net, and some other sites.

Personally, I thought the search results has some irrelevant entries, but overall, it works. Though, Template Search’s functionality is not much more than just some links to third-party sites (How To Bookmark Webpages On Any Browser).

However, it seems like replacing your home page/new tab is completely unnecessary. Template Search could have easily fit its search widget in an extension pop-up – the little window that appears when you click an extension’s icon in the upper right of the browser.

Template Search can read your browsing history.

It makes unhelpful changes to the browser

Template Search also replaces the new tab page in your browser. The page that serves as a sort of gateway to the wider internet gets taken over by this template extension. But why does Template Search replace the new tab?

Most likely, it’s to make money. It’s a commercial extension, after all. And Template Search can make money by influencing how you browse the web, what websites you visit. Its new tab offers you an internet search box. This search box ignores your default search engine preferences and links to Yahoo (or another site). That it links its search box with Yahoo is actually very typical. Lots of browser extensions do this.

It’s also worth noting that when Template Search replaces the new tab, it fails to replicate some basic features:

  • pinning new links to the new tab
  • editing the pinned links
  • hiding shortcuts
  • changing your background picture.

Not to mention, if you used to use the default new tab on Chrome, you were probably accustomed to having links to the Google services closeby. With Template Search, that’s no longer the case.

The Template Search new tab is missing some essential features.

How to remove Template Search

Uninstall Template Search manually and check your other add-ons for potentially unwanted items:

  • unfamiliar add-ons
  • rarely or never used extensions
  • extensions that ask for excessive permissions.

Think of how you installed Template Search and if you installed any other extensions the same way.

Check your device, too – look for potentially unwanted programs and apps. Antivirus tools (Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, etc.) can be helpful here.

Check your browser settings – search engine, new tab, notification settings.

Template Search is not a unique add-on. It’s made by Tightrope Interactive, the same company that released News Reader, Maps SearchQuick Speed Test, and a few other extensions. They also made some unhelpful changes to the browsers on which they were installed.
