Templates App is a browser add-on that allows searching a few template sites on your browser’s new tab. When installed, it replaces the new tab page with its own.
The new tab used by Templates App lacks many customization features that can be found on vanilla new tabs, as well as many popular new tab extensions. Overall, it seems unnecessary for Templates App to replace the new tab when it could work perfectly well from a much less intrusive extension pop-up.

Is Templates App safe?
Templates App searches for templates
Templates App is a browser extension. Very similar to Template Search by Tightrope Interactive, Templates App replaces your browser’s new tab page and allows searching for templates in various categories: brochures, presentations, business cards, flyers. etc.
Templates App finds templates from Template.net, Office.com, and Canva.com (though the latter often lead to a 404). It also shows ads on these search results.
In addition, the Templates App new tab has a bunch of widgets, including a weather display, a to-do list, notes, and a few background pictures to personalize the new tab page.
It promotes Yahoo search
On its new tab page, Templates App promotes Yahoo search. There’s no setting to change the search engine used by the search box in the new tab. Luckily, searches from the address bar should be unaffected.
It is very common for browser extensions to push a certain search engine. The developers know that few users want to use Yahoo.com or Bing.com to search the internet, but they make money from their search partners, so it is what it is.
Templates App is potentially unwanted
There’s no benefit to the user to have their search engine options on the new tab restricted. This doesn’t make Templates App dangerous, but it’s still a problem: why does Templates App take over the new tab at all? Why not show the template search page after the user clicks on Templates App’s icon? It would be just as convenient and far less intrusive.
But that would make it difficult to monetize Templates App, I suppose.
As it is, users must trade their new tab page, which they might have painstakingly customized to make it their own, for Templates App’s subpar page.
How to remove Templates App
If you like Templates App, then there’s no harm in keeping it. But although Templates App is not harmful, it’s also not helpful.
Also, know that you can customize your browser and create something far better than what Templates App is offering without having to compromise on your search preferences and privacy:
- customize the new tab page and pin links to important sites,
- bookmark your favorite sites for quick access,
- add custom search engines to search sites directly.
You can uninstall Templates App manually as described in the instructions below. It’s also a good idea to review your other browser add-ons – if you have any that you don’t use or that you didn’t install, it might be wise to remove or disable them. After all, extensions are generally bad for privacy, so letting too many of them onboard your browser is risky.
Antivirus apps, such as Spyhunter for Windows, Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner for Mac, and others, can also help find suspicious and potentially unwanted apps and files.
