How the Free TikTok Followers sites work
This post was inspired by the “Free TikTok Followers – Tiktok Followers Free” browser extension. This extension can be found on the Chrome Web Store, where it has a thousand users and overwhelmingly negative reviews.
There are so many websites that offer to “generate” or “hack” some free followers for your TikTok account. They’re easy to find, too – they appear in internet search results.
Unfortunately, being on the Chrome Web Store or Google’s search results doesn’t mean that a site is safe. The apps, extensions, and sites that promise free TikTok followers are all lying.
What the Free TikTok Followers sites really do
There are many websites that promise to generate free TikTok followers. In my experience, most of them work like this:
- They ask you to input your user name. Many don’t check if the username is real.
- They ask you to choose how many followers you wish to receive.
- Then they say that there is unusually high traffic from your area and you will have to verify that you are not a bot.
- To “verify”, you are asked to complete surveys, sign up for subscriptions, interact with ads, download shady apps, follow other TikTok accounts.
Most of the time when I use a fake TikTok name (when there was no account with such a name), the Free TikTok Followers sites don’t care – they still pretend to add new followers. That’s because all that the Free TikTok Followers sites want is to show ads. To get people to click on those ads, the follower generator sites insist that if users complete all the surveys and other verification requirements, they’ll get free followers.
There are occasionally sites that give you followers in exchange for money or for downloading apps. However, these followers tend to be fake and don’t engage with your account.
What are the dangers of the Free TikTok Followers scam?
If you diligently complete the verification requirements raised by the Free TikTok Followers sites, it will cost you time, money, and privacy.
The Free TikTok Followers sites often advertise subscription services with costly weekly fees. They also promote various apps, some of which might be safe while others are fleeceware (useless apps with high subscription costs). There are also apps that promise free TikTok followers but only deliver advertising spam.
Though I haven’t encountered this myself, there are apparently some Free TikTok Followers sites that offer not just ads, but prompt visitors to download actual malware (The Three Kinds of Scams Trying to Trick You on TikTok).
Occasionally, a Free TikTok Followers site asks you to log in to your account with your username, email, and password. These are phishing sites – websites that impersonate legitimate sites to steal people’s login credentials. The people behind phishing sites might sell the credentials or use them to hack accounts.
Even if you avoid malicious ads, the Free TikTok Followers sites still waste your time.
How to avoid TikTok Followers scams?
Don’t look for free TikTok follower generators
While there are tools that let you get new followers (various “growth tools”), they’re usually paid and some of them use bots and other fake traffic. There is no way to get real TikTok followers for free. All the sites and apps that claim to give you free likes, followers, subscribers, etc. are scams.
We’ve seen this scam before with YouTube Subscribers Generator, free V-Bucks hacks, various Bitcoin giveaway scams, etc. All these sites do is convince people to click on ads. And sometimes steal their usernames and passwords.
You might be able to avoid some of the Free TikTok Follower sites by using ad blockers and malicious site blockers. Ad blockers can help you stay safe online, though you shouldn’t rely on them completely. It’s important to be careful.
Remove Free TikTok Followers extensions and apps
Uninstall any apps and extensions that promise to give you free followers. Below are instructions for removing browser extensions.
It’s advisable to check your device for other suspicious apps. You can do that with an anti-malware program like Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner for Mac, Spyhunter for Windows, or others. If they find malware, remove it.
