TheCyberProtector - How to remove

TheCyberProtector is a computer security and cleaning program that is flagged by antivirus tools, as well as web browser security filters. Though it doesn’t seem to be malicious, it is very suspicious: it’s not obvious what company is behind TheCyberProtector, its home page is a copy of another website, and it really pushes its tech support services. Overall, TheCyberProtector is a suspicious and untrustworthy program.

What is TheCyberProtector?

PC cleaner

Promises to speed up your computer

TheCyberProtector is a program for Windows PCs. It is advertised as helping diagnose and fix PC problems. TheCyberProtector focuses a lot on tech support. It prominently features its phone number (1-855-999-9608) for contacting its representatives.

Supposedly, TheCyberProtector makes your computer run faster by deleting files that slow it down – I think this doesn’t make sense, but who’s to stop TheCyberProtector from saying whatever it wants. It also says it can stop pop-up and computer crashes by deleting files and programs.

Detected by antivirus scanners

When downloading TheCyberProtector’s installer, I got a warning from my browser that the file was potentially unsafe. When I scanned it, it came up with a few detections: Virustotal.com.

One of the antiviruses that detected TheCyberProtector labeled it ShieldApps. I don’t think that TheCyberProtector is related to Shield Antivirus, but it does appear to use the same template for its user interface, so the programs look very similar.

Overall, TheCyberProtector looks alright. When I read its nonsensical feature descriptions, I expected another scareware app that detects hundreds of errors and tries to scare me into paying for it. But it didn’t.

TheCyberProtector is detected by 3 scanners on Virustotal.

A copy of Mycleanpc.com

Initially, I discovered TheCyberProtector by looking at Mycleanpc.com.

Mycleanpc.com is another computer cleaning program. Although it’s labeled by a few scanners as a potentially unwanted program, it’s not dangerous. We’ve written about GetMyDrivers, which is related to it. These programs are generally okay.

Here’s the thing – Thecyberprotector.com copies the Mycleanpc.com site. It does that almost completely, changing just a few details here and there.

It’s not just the colors and the layout. TheCyberProtector left intact Mycleanpc.com’s links to the AppEsteem and SecureTrust pages which confirm that Real Defense Holdings programs, like MyCleanPC and GetMyDrivers, are certified by them. These sites have standards for user security and it’s a sign of pride to be certified by them.

I do not believe that TheCyberProtector is associated with Real Defense Holdings. It has no reason to link to those sites.

TheCyberProtector isn’t the first to copy the Mycleanpc.com website. Gocleanpc.com and Pccleaner.site did the same thing a few months ago. It’s baffling why TheCyberProtector would do this.

TheCyberProtector's site is to similar to the Mycleanpc one.

How to remove TheCyberProtector

TheCyberProtector can be uninstalled normally – from your Settings or from the Control Panel.

You can use an antivirus program, such as Spyhunter, Malwarebyte, or another to scan your computer.

I saw some suspicious sites that advertised cleaning programs with the same text that was used on the Thecyberprotector.com site. If you experience pop-ups and redirects in your internet browser, it is important to check your computer for malicious programs and your browser for bad browser extensions. Advertisements spread by adware infections are often dangerous.

Even if you think that TheCyberProtector is fine, I would advise against using it for a few reasons:

  • It doesn’t clearly reveal what company is behind it. It seems to be Marvel corporate services, a company that does customer support, web development, and marketing.
  • When a program’s home page is copied from another site and includes errors, that reflects badly on the product.
  • Antivirus scanners have reasons for detecting TheCyberProtector, including problematic (deceptive) distribution of the program and similarities to known malware.

It’s safer to use antivirus programs that don’t suffer from such issues.
