TheMediaConverter is a browser add-on solely for showing advertisements to users from the USA. It’s a companion extension to some other browser plugins and it is supposed to help the developers of those products to monetize their products. This means that, if you are seeing pop-ups labeled “Ad by TheMediaConverter”, “Powered by TheMediaConverter”, and similar, then you have not only TheMediaConverter, but maybe a few other suspicious extensions, too.

While TheMediaConverter is not a virus, it is potentially unwanted. If someone wishes to support a browser application they like by viewing a few more advertisements, that is admirable. However, due to the way that TheMediaConverter is installed — with bundling –, it’s inevitable that some people have it installed without even knowing. If you are seeing TheMediaConverter ads against your will, know that it is not difficult to get rid of them, but it’s worth knowing how they started so that you can avoid similar situations in the future.
How TheMediaConverter is installed
This browser plugin is bundled with other extensions. A few of the bundled add-ons are these:
- My File Converter
- Search Manuals
- Classifieds List
- Free Forms Now
- Instant Inbox
- Doc To Pdf
- File Converter
Some of these plugins implement bundling. The way they do it tricks some people into accidentally installing unwanted plugins. While some might say that we should just be more careful, the truth is that developers should be honest with users and make sure that even the most careless of us know when we are about to install something on our browser.
Sometimes, freeware bundling is responsible for browser add-ons. Some people never installed any browser add-ons but still ended up with a few. Sometimes, they can’t even uninstall them because a virus keeps reinstalling them. It is not uncommon for adware to partner with viruses to spread and display ads, so even when it’s not a virus, an application like TheMediaConverter can be considered dangerous and suspicious.
Are browser extensions safe?
There is a question as to whether browser extensions are safe at all. These applications have a lot of power over your browser. For example, TheMediaConverter can see and change all the data on the websites you visit. This means that TheMediaConverter can change the way that websites are displayed to you. Additionally, it can see what you type and you can only trust TheMediaConverter to not record and reveal this information.
Being able to see and change your websites is necessary for some extensions to deliver their promised functions. But it’s also important for people to not use browser add-ons which they do not need. They’re a big privacy risk and some are even malicious, such as those committing ad fraud by abusing your device. So, it’s worth being careful and removing those extensions that you aren’t using.
It’s difficult to know if you can trust a particular browser extension, but consider a few issues before installing one:
- How are the reviews? How many are there, compared to the number of users?
This part of TheMediaConverter is very suspicious: tens of thousands of users, almost no reviews. Normal extensions are expected to have candid reviews which reference very specific things about the products, such as a particular update. - How much do you know about the developer? What’s their reputation? Do they talk to the users of their extensions?
This is another case where TheMediaConverter disappoints. The responsible company really avoid identifying itself on the TheMediaConverter website. - If your browser displays extension permissions (like Chrome or Firefox), are the permissions excessive?
TheMediaConverter asks for the singular permission to read and change all your data on all the websites you visit. This gives it immense power but is necessary if TheMediaConverter is to show you pop-ups, inline ads, and banners.
Overall, TheMediaConverter is somewhat suspicious, but likely not malicious. They promise in their privacy policy to not share the data they collect about you with third parties, which is nice. They provide instructions on how to uninstall the extension, which is also helpful.
How to remove TheMediaConverter
If you installed TheMediaConverter intentionally and trust the developers, feel free to continue using it. But if you want to remove or disable it, that’s not difficult to do.
While ads by TheMediaConverter can be removed simply by uninstalling the extension, like said earlier, this add-on didn’t get installed on its own. It comes with various other browser add-ons of poor reputation. If you were to review your list of installed browser add-ons, you’re likely to see a few hijackers there. Think about which ones are useful to you, and which ones you might want to remove. All the instructions are below this article.
If you never installed these extensions, or if they return after being removed, scan your computer with a strong antivirus tool, for example, Spyhunter (Windows), Combo-Cleaner (Mac). A PC might need to be started in Safe Mode to avoid malicious processes interfering with the antivirus tools.
