How Thenewstreams.com works
Thenewstreams.com is an adware site, however, it also has a front of a news site. Identical to Worldbestposts.com, Thenewstreams.com copies Latimes.com articles a couple of hours after the original. I don’t know if they got permission from Latimes.com but it seems unlikely since there’s no link to the original, the links are stripped out, and the styling is missing.
To make money, Thenewstreams.com displays ads in the upper right corner that lead to fake celebrity endorsements of cryptocurrency trading scam sites and to fake giveaways-subscription scams.
There’s another side to Thenewstreams.com – a page that shows an animation of a loading bar and encourages visitors to allow notifications to “continue watching”. This Thenewstreams.com page appears as a pop-up ad on free (illegal) video streaming sites. People see it and think that’s a legitimate warning and that they really must allow notifications if they want to keep watching their movie or TV show. So, they click the “Allow” button and then go on with their day.
Once Thenewstreams.com gets permission to send notifications to a web browser, it starts showing pop-up ads. They look like little pop-ups in the corner of the screen labeled with “Thenewstreams.com”.
Now, Thenewstreams.com is estimated to get more than 10 million visits per month.
Dangerous ads
Ads by Thenewstreams.com are generally worse than those you see on regular websites. Thenewstreams.com must have low standards that attract advertisers whose products are banned by more mainstream advertising companies. As a result, Thenewstreams.com’s ads deliver links to various scams, malware, and other potentially dangerous sites:
- Unregulated supplements and medicines. These are usually supported by fake stories and endorsed by made-up experts represented with stock photos.
- Fake news articles that endorse crypto trading scams, such as Worldwide-breakingnews.com.
- Browser hijackers, computer cleaners and optimizers, alarmist VPNs, and other potentially unwanted software.
- Fake virus warnings – tech support scams.
- Fake surveys and giveaways – phishing scams.
- Other notification spam sites, like Onemessages.com.
The longer Thenewstreams.com is allowed to display ads on your screen, the more risk there is for your computer to get infected.
How to block pop-ups by Thenewstreams.com
If the only problem with your browser is that Thenewstreams.com is showing pop-up ads, then the solution is easy – just block the notifications in your browser settings:
- Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
- Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
- Edge (Chromium) – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
- Firefox – open Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
In the page that opened, find Thenewstreams.com and other URLs – they should be in a list of sites that your browser allows to send notifications. All you need to do is click the button next to each address and select the option Block. That’s it!
Of course, it’s advisable to scan your computer for malware just in case. Thenewstreams.com promotes malware and is promoted by malware, so its appearance may coincide with malware infections. Use scanners that can recognize potentially unwanted programs, such as Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS. Then examine the scan results and if any malicious programs or files are found, delete them.
It would also be helpful to use an anti-malware app to protect you against malicious sites (like HTML:Script-inf), especially if you have to deal with sites like Thenewstreams.com regularly.
