Problems with Maps N’ Directions Tab

A web browser is a program that we use to interact with the internet – examples include Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Maps N’ Directions Tab is a browser add-on – a small program that changes how your browser behaves. For example, it changes your new tab page and your homepage to Tmapsndirections.com.

Tmapsndirections.com looks kind of like a normal new tab page – it has a search bar in the middle and a few links to popular websites. But it’s worse than the default Chrome new tab page in a number of ways:

  • Tmapsndirections.com doesn’t show your frequently visited websites, making it harder to quickly go to your favorite pages.
  • Tmapsndirections.com shows a web search box that searches the internet, but it uses Yahoo.com instead of your previous search engine. There’s no way to change this and set your own engine.
  • Overall, there’s almost nothing that you can customize on that page, unlike Chromes default new tab.
  • Unsurprisingly, Tmapsndirections.com doesn’t have quick links to web apps like Google’s Gmail, Drive, Docs, and others. These links are quite useful for some people, so losing them can be very disorienting.
  • Finally, there are ads on Tmapsndirections.com.

On top of all that, Maps N’ Directions Tab reads your browsing history. Data about you is used for showing you targeted ads.

Tmapsndirections.com is a very basic new tab page that lacks many useful features.

How Maps N’ Directions Tab gets installed

You might have found Tmapsndirections.com while searching for driving directions online. Maps N’ Directions Tab is advertised on Mapsndirections.com – a site that pretends to be an online map, but actually it just redirects you to install Maps N’ Directions Tab.

It makes it look like you have to install it – which is a red flag. You should never have to install a browser extension to see results, download a file, or visit a website. This pressure is used by malicious software makers to attack inexperienced and unconfident internet users.

Seeing ads for Mapsndirections.com is unlikely – unless you have a search hijacker already infecting your computer. Not necessarily, but it’s very possible that a malicious browser extension or a bad program on your computer is messing with your search results – redirecting you and injecting ads. This would make links to browser hijackers like Maps N’ Directions Tab appear as ads on top of your web search results, along with sites like Zapmeta.com and Info.com.

This can be fixed by deleting malware with an antivirus program and getting rid of suspicious browser extensions. Browser extensions are usually the main way that adware infects computers nowadays.

So, after trying to look up directions on Mapsndirections.com, it tells you to install Maps N’ Directions Tab, but it also may tell you to install Hide My Searches and Email Search Tools. This would make your default search engine into Hidemysearches.com and constantly redirect you from other search sites to it.

When I tried to use Firefox to install Maps N’ Directions Tab, it blocked it, but it still works fine in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge (new).
