Today Online News - How to remove

Today Online News, or search.htodayonlinenews.org, is a browser add-on that intrusively modifies your settings to force you to use the search engine that it promotes. This persistent extension is a mild type of malware that shows unwanted ads and is considered suspicious by many antivirus programs.

Today Online News is not associated with any particular newspaper and is a simple browser add-on developed by Eightpoint Technologies Ltd. It’s supposed to offer quick access to popular news websites on the new tab page. Unfortunately, the extension isn’t any better than the other browser add-ons created by Eightpoint: Search.hconvert2pdfnow.com, Search.hmyquickconverter.com, Transit Maps Directions (this article has an excerpt of the privacy policy if you want to take a look at it).

What is it doing wrong?

It’s easy to say that Today Online News isn’t doing anything illegal and that if someone doesn’t like it that it’s easy to uninstall. That’s true, and yet, its developers can be criticized for using very manipulative and dishonest practices to distribute the extension and for collecting information about users while not developing any valuable or unique features that would make the Today Online News useful.

Bundling

Depending on which browser you use to install Today Online News, the extension can be a bundler. This means that multiple installations are chained together after Today Online News to make it seem like they’re all a single process. The way to refuse the optional extensions is not obvious and there is not enough information about the additional extensions. This is not good — bundling is sometimes used to distribute malicious software, which makes Eightpoint look suspicious for using it.

Today Online News bundled two extensions, one of which was entirely useless because it was a new tab replacer and clashed with Today Online News; The only thing it could do was remain in the background, invisible to you, collecting information. The other bundled extension, Search Encrypt, is used to hijack your search engine where Today Online News fails. If you attempt to use some other search engine, Search Encrypt will try to stop you. People also complain about Search Encrypt being useless and difficult to remove.

Advertising and collecting information

Advertising is a legitimate way to monetize a free product, but Today Online News does not offer a valuable product. Knowing that most modern browsers allow you to modify their new tab pages, and that saving links to quickly access is one of the most basic such modifications, Today Online News’s intrusive spying feels unearned. If you read the permissions that Today Online News needs, you can find a couple of permissions that serve to track your activity:

  • Read and change your data on all htodayonlinenews.org sites and search.htodayonlinenews.org
  • Replace the page you see when opening a new tab
  • Read your browsing history
  • Manage your apps, extensions, and themes

It’s not clear why Today Online News needs your browsing data unless you read the privacy policy. There, it’s revealed that the information collected is shared with advertisers, and though that data does not include your real identity, it’s probably possible to deduce that from your browsing history.

Another small issue is that too many websites that Today Online News links to want to send you notifications. They can be very annoying when they’re not relevant, so don’t allow any that you aren’t interested in.

Offering low-quality features

Almost every extension by Eightpoint looks and acts the same. Compare search.htodayonlinenews.org to legitimate extensions which receive constant updates, take feedback from the users, and are transparent about who the developers are — the difference is night and day. Today Online News and its sister extensions don’t seem to get any significant improvements over time, which makes me wonder if the add-ons are safe to use, or if they might be outdated. Plenty of Eightpoint’s extensions have been abandoned by the developers, old features not working anymore because they rely on other services (especially relevant to their map-themed extensions).

You can modify your browser better than Today Online News in a few minutes. “One-click access to many of the popular news networks” is simple to achieve without third-party extensions. And you wouldn’t be forced to use an unwanted search engine that fills your results with ads which make finding real search results time-consuming and frustrating.
