What is Toksearches.xyz
Search hijacker
Toksearches.xyz is a website. Its function is to take in your search queries and to redirect them to another site. For example, from Toksearches.xyz to Smashapps to Yahoo. You might only be able to see Toksearches.xyz for a moment in your address bar every time you search for something in your browser.
But why does your browser call Toksearches.xyz?
It’s because of malicious browser extensions that use Toksearches.xyz to hijack your search traffic. These extensions might be installed on your browser without you even knowing. Extensions like BipApp, FlixSearch, SearchWorld, SopitaAm, and others.
Once they’re installed, they make a few changes to the settings of your browser to cause it to visit Toksearches.xyz:
- They can read some of the webpages in your browser, such as Google and Bing sites. As webpages are basically documents that your browser displays, extensions can edit them by adding or removing content, or causing them to open other sites.
- They can usually read your browsing history and open and close browser tabs. When you search for something online, these extensions might read your query, then open a Toksearches.xyz tab with that query and close your current browser tab.
- Some of these extensions change your default search setting.
The result – Toksearches.xyz can read every one of your search queries and control which site opens your results.
The people behind Toksearches.xyz’s are likely making money from all the traffic they redirect to partner search engines.
Trojan
So, how do these extensions that carry Toksearches.xyz spread?
There are a few ways for browser add-ons get installed without your permission:
- Bundling. Some freeware installers include optional offers. They aren’t always honestly presented. You could accidentally allow one to be installed without realizing it.
- Misleading ads. Fake download links, ads that look like update warnings, and warnings claiming that you must install this extension to keep using the site. It’s all just fake advertising.
In both cases, the victim has to agree to install the hijacker that brings Toksearches.xyz. But they are misled into agreeing. Fake ads and dishonest installers trick people into downloading malware. It’s not legitimate in the slightest.
Funny that their names are so similar, Toksearches.xyz works in a similar way to Tiktok-searches.com, which also uses misleading ads to spread, like in the picture above.
How to remove Toksearches.xyz
Malicious browser extensions are easy to install, but they’re also easy to remove.
In the upper right corner of your browser is the extension area (puzzle button) where you can see all the active extensions. You can also remove them by clicking the three-dot button and choosing Remove.
If you aren’t sure which add-ons are responsible for Toksearches.xyz, check their details and permissions. Look for access to Google.com, for mentions of Toksearches.xyz, or just for the ability to read your browsing history.
To check extension details, go to your browser settings, the Extensions section. There, you can examine the permissions of each extension by clicking Details. If an extension redirects you away from its Details page (which many of them do), then it’s definitely suspicious.
Some extensions actually cannot be removed normally. Especially malicious ones. If your browser says it’s managed by an organization or an administrator and the Remove buttons for some add-ons are missing or grayed-out, check our post on extensions that abuse enterprise policy.
If you got Toksearches.xyz from a bundler, you can use an anti-malware application, like Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, and others to detect it. Anti-malware tools can also detect some browser hijackers and more dangerous threats, like adware infections.
